Local 99 scored a victory at the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) Friday, April 18, 2008 when the Commissioners voted unanimously (4 of 5 present) to changes in the minor posting rules. The new Minor Posting #VI makes it possible for minors to be present at a show if the venue has an approved (by the OLCC) control plan to keep alcohol out of the hands of minors. This has been allowed under certain conditions already, such as at a Blazers game or at the Crystal Ballroom, but this new ruling formalizes the process and opens up the all ages potential for more mixed use facilities. Generally speaking, straight up bars such as Dante’s will still probably not qualify for all age’s events.

Since June 2007, Local 99 and Cary Clarke of PDX Pop Now! have worked hand in hand on this issue. Together, we worked with OLCC staff on the rule itself, raised awareness for the potential of these changes amongst musicians, venue operators and promoters. Letter and email writing campaigns to the OLCC showed strong support for the rule, and many attended and testified at the hearings.

The rule will take effect June 1, 2008. For more information, please contact Bruce Fife at Local 99.

Ross,

Congratulations! Happy to see that the OLCC vote went favor of changing minor posting rule.

Re: your Voice Mail about the Union's MySpace. Yes I'd be honored to have one of my song on the site. Depending on which CD you have, "Honey do List" would be a funny song. "Let's Rock" or "Oh La La the Mardi Gras." Let me know if you want to some Cd's off at the Union Hall.

Hi Norman:

I just checked your website out. Very nice and I loved music, but then I’m a die hard blues fan. I just moved here from LA where I was a well known performer in the local roots music scene. I recently got involved with the Local 99. I’m on the committee to get local radio stations to give some air time to the local independent artists and musicians. I moved here to take care of my mother and be near the rest of my family.  My cousin is the chef at Out of the Blues so I will be coming out to check out your band. Looking forward to it.

Cheers,

Hey Norman,

Just pick the one you like and send me an MP3 and a picture to go with it.

Thanks!

Becky,

The Out of Blues Gig turned out to be a fun gig. Sorry I didn't get to meet you that night, but keep on supporting local music. Please spread the news about Out of the Blues, It's a nice venue, the Owners are good people and the staff off the hook.

Melodically in the Groove,

Norman Sylvester
