My two cents worth on the fair pay scheme (maybe I am entitled to less than two cents worth since I can't make time for the meetings)

Concentrating on the revenue of different establishments would be like trying to herd cats uphill. Lots of clubs fail because many of those owners don't understand their accounting anyway. If we try to get them to share their books, some will brag and exaggerate, some will cry poor and hide a lot of their revenue, others will get mad and say it's none of our business. Just getting them involved in a discussion, and coming around to accept the idea that a musician needs as much income as a bartender would be a huge, meaningful positive step. Complications like "star ratings" could be added much later, when enough clubs are on board, and when enough musicians have decided that we really are all in this together.

I am in total agreement with Rob. This was my contention before I attended. Start a conversation, develop a dialogue, determine the bases for communication, understanding, and agreement. We have done that, but we have only done it among ourselves.

Good point, Rob. Club owners are notoriously a difficult lot and very unpredictable. In my experience making my living playing music I have found that the places that do play a flat rate are the bars, pubs and restaurants where a band has to do a four set night (9 – 1:30) and are required to do a certain amount of covers as well as requests and keep the clientele happy in general. Unfortunately the places that feature acts doing a one show concert type showcase of original music always pay according to how much the band brings in at the door and then the band only gets a percentage, instead of the 100% they deserve. I have done the showcase scene in L.A. for many years as well as played the bars, pubs and restaurants around So Cal and Texas for money.  I know the difference. To my knowledge this is the way it works in just about any city in the US, Canada and the UK.  In other words, if you want to be guaranteed to get paid to play you better be prepared play to the joints where you have to do a four set night and perform covers, however, as a consolation, you can always stick in your original music as part of the set lists and sell your cds at the gig as well. It’s hard work, but it’s a living …. sort of.
