React – What’s the big deal?
ReactJS from Facebook is the shiny new kid on the block…and actually can be useful. But getting your head around how it deals with life can be daunting. I have two weeks of my life I’ll never get back, so I’m going to give them to you.
And we won’t be building YATDL (Yet Another To Do List). We’ll walk through building a non-trivial multiple nested components applet that can be dropped into the middle of an existing web page. Yes, Virginia, you can get some of the benefits of React without throwing out everything you’ve ever done. I’ve built a React component that runs in a Wordpress page…but don’t despise me for that.
When the evening is over, you’ll have a good idea of how to get started with React, what it can do for you and how to avoid some of the big gotchas.

• What’s the buzz? What problem is React solving?
• One way or the highway, data flow in React
• WTF!?! What’s that Flux?
• JSX is not a railroad
• 50 shades of OK. How to tie it all together and bind React to your page
• Write when you get work. AJAX to get and send your React result
About the speaker:
Doug Johnson is a senior web developer for Taylor Publishing in
Dallas. He's been at this computer thing since the invention of the
abacus, but stays as current as the informationally explosive world we
live in allows.
