Improv Comedy: A Creative Way to Help Our Schools In Hard Times
September 24, 2009…CLOVIS, CA Clovis North Educational Center’s
Theatre Arts department discovered a unique way to benefit their
students, budget and the general public; with laughter! They produce
professional open-to-the-public improv comedy shows. “Our last one
sold out and word about the show is spreading quickly” stated Andrew
Cardillo, drama teacher for Clovis North High School.
The Theatre Arts department has entered into a strategic alliance
with
Central California’s premier improv comedy group, the
knuckledraggers. “This is our way of giving back to the Central
Valley which has treated us so well over the years, said Mike Conner,
the head knuckledragger. “Everyone wins. We keep the $5 ticket
price
low for the public, the students receive first-hand experience of
what
it takes to produce a professional improv comedy show and they
perform
on-stage in front of large audiences with professional improv
comedians, all while the drama department puts a little away to help
with costs such as sets, costumes and other expenses” Conner added.
Conner, a professional emcee/improv comedian by night and sprinkler
sales rep for SimplexGrinnell by day, also works with the students
during their regular class time. “Through the year, Mr. Cardillo
invites me to come to the classroom and run professional improv
clinics for the students. They enjoy the challenge as much as I
enjoy
challenging them. A few of these students will be ready for the
professional stage in a few years and I’ll need fresh talent as some
of the current knuckledraggers are making odd noises and their paint
is flaking” Conner laughingly admits.
The Clovis North Theatre Arts drama department and the
knuckledraggers
produced three shows last year. This year they’ll double that number
and produce six open-to-the-public shows. They’re currently offering
a “Season Pass” for the remaining five shows for $20.00. “In these
financially difficult times, we offer a safe venue where you can take
your family, friends or date to enjoy clean comedy and experience
much-
needed, soul-cleansing laughter” Mr. Cardillo chimed. “When you
laugh, you forget the crazy world outside and you feel so much
better!” The shows are promoted as clean comedy and rated PG-13.
The remaining Saturday night shows are March 20, April 17 and June
5th. They start at 7:30pm and run approximately 90 minutes. Tickets
and reservations are available at www.clovisnorthdrama.com under the
knuckledraggers link.
