CAN A HACKER TAKE OVER YOUR COMPUTER?

It's a scenario straight out of a computer nightmare: Someone, somewhere, is secretly watching everything you do on your computer. They can see your files, read your messages, and even control your webcam or microphone. Not fun. This is what a remote access trojan (RAT) is designed to do.

What to know:

  1. What is a Remote Access Trojan (RAT)?
A RAT is malware that gives a hacker covert control of your device. Once installed, it can steal passwords or files, monitor your screen and keystrokes, turn on your webcam or mic, install more malware, or even use your machine to launch further attacks.

  2. How do hackers take over a computer?
Hackers spread RATs via phishing emails/texts/DMs, malicious downloads (free apps, cracked software), fake software updates, or by visiting compromised websites.

  3. How do I know if my computer has been taken over by a hacker?
Signs that your computer has been infected by a RAT can include sluggish performance, unusual network activity (does your internet connection seem unusually busy?), unknown apps or programs appearing on your computer, and unexpected pop-ups. If something feels "off," it's worth investigating.
  4. How to prevent RATs

Be cautious with attachments/links, download only from trusted sources, keep your software updated, and use antivirus and firewall protections.
