HOW TO SPOT ROMANCE SCAMS

Romance scams are one of the most financially and emotionally damaging types of online fraud. Scammers exploit trust, affection, and loneliness to steal money and personal information. These scams can range from catfishing to investment scams known as "pig butchering." Knowing how these scams work can help you spot them early and stay safe.

What to know:

  1. What are romance scams and how do they work?

Scammers create fake online identities on dating apps, social media, or messaging platforms to build trust and emotional connection, then eventually ask for money, gifts, or financial help (often using convincing stories). They may even use AI-generated photos or deepfakes to appear genuine.
  2. Red flags to look out for

Signs include requests for money (especially via hard-to-track methods like gift cards or crypto), excuses to avoid video calls or in-person meetings, rapid declarations of love, claims of living far away or being in the military, and attempts to move the conversation off the dating platform.
  3. How to protect yourself

Limit what personal information you share, use reverse image search to check profile photos, and slow down the relationship. If you suspect a scam, stop communication, save evidence, notify your financial institution, and report the scam to authorities and the dating platform.
