Dear Members,

We have received concerns expressed by other AROs and Aeroclub which we would like to bring to your attention and therefore include the following correspondence we were copied into:  For the benefit of all recreational pilots across disciplines, please ensure compliance to the recreational privileges allowed!

Dear Council Members,

Subsequent to us sending out an invitation last week to all section heads of the AeCSA to submit detailed lists of problematic ATF’s, quite a large number of ATF’s were released last week Friday and I believe some yesterday and some will be released today. Please forward to Charné your updated lists by COB on Thursday 16 July so we can submit a consolidated list to AeCSA. Please do not ask individuals to forward the detail to the office but rather do it via the section as the data can be validated. We find that most of the emails coming from individuals are incomplete.

Rob and myself was in a meeting with SACAA yesterday afternoon discussing some further possibilities to relax restrictions on recreational activities. Obviously it is rather difficult right now to motivate big changes, as South Africa is entering its Covid 19 peak. One of the requests was permission for full stop landings at other airfields for the purpose of refuelling.

One of the topics that was brought to the attention of the AeCSA was pilots flying without any form of permission. It is a grave concern to SACAA that, although they agreed to make the process as accessible and easy as possible,  there are individuals that completely ignore the regulations and fly without any form of permission. Currently there is no single RA flight allowed in South Africa without some form of permission or submission. The unfortunate situation that SACAA wants to avoid is that the enforcement currently is done by the South African Police and that they arrest individuals as happened this past weekend. These breaches of lock down are reported to the Minister of Police and he will simply lobby to withdraw all privileges from Recreational Aviation as they have just done with alcohol. I don’t even want to get into the debate on Life Insurance and Aircraft insurance if there is an accident while performing an illegal flight as two insurers already informed me that a flight without permission will result in no insurance.

I really hope that Heads of AeCSA Sections will communicate with their members the importance of compliance with the allowed privileges as it stands at the moment, as a few rouge pilots could spoil it for the entire fraternity. Once again, I would like to thank all the Heads of Sections for their support, compliments and motivation, it is highly appreciated. I must thank Sandra and Charné doing all the admin and queries regarding the current allowances, you are doing a great job. We have been up to date handling queries from any individual no matter if they are an AeCSA member or not,but from the end of July we will start focusing more towards AeCSA members for queries and support with ATF’s as the work load is massive. We will still do the flight approvals for all pilots immaterial of membership.

Hope you keep safe and do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance.

Best Regards,
