Dear SAHPA members

There is discontent amongst a few members that SAHPA is overcharging on SAHPA membership fees, and earns R50k+ per month on interest from R2m funds invested.  Furthermore, there are allegations by the same few that SAHPA is doing nothing to get recreational and tandem flying approved.

Disappointingly, clarity was not sought via formal channels (contacting the SAHPA office and asking the question) but rather via a TFI WhatsApp “wanted” group.  SAHPA prefers members engaging with SAHPA directly when they are unsure or would like understanding rather than taking matters into their own hands.

In this instance, SAHPA will provide clarity so as to dispense with the rumours #FakeNews.

Membership Fees:

·         SAHPA Membership remains at R 400.00 (this has remained the same since 2018 when the present committee was appointed),

  • Insurance Remains at R 100.00 per member and is for site and third party,
  • CAA increased their licence fees ( Part 187) annually and we have only adjusted the full SAHPA fees accordingly which was only R 20.00 additional to last year. The National pilot licence varies from initial to upgrade (current fee have increased for-  Initial R 530.00 to R 550, Renewal R 410 to R440 and upgrade from R 350 to R 370)
  • Aero Club R300.00 (decreased from R 540) or R450 should FAI membership be required,
  • The PostNet/courier fee has been increased from R 100.00 to R 180.00 (The R100 remains unchanged being Postnet to Postnet courier delivery i.e from Sahpa to the member and the R80 being a recovery of Sahpa incurred costs courier licenses to CAA and then again from CAA back to SAHPA).

Pilots are not obligated to pay the postage/PostNet/ courier fee to SAHPA  and are more than welcome to make arrangements directly with CAA.

Interest earned:
There has also been mention that SAHPA receives R 54 000.00 interest per month on R2m invested and this is absolutely untrue ie. 32% return! The interest received is roughly R6,000-R8,000 per month and the funds are in a market account for unforeseen expenses.

Recreational and tandem flying:
SAHPA has been motivating to get recreational and tandem flying approved, the applications have been lodged and we are awaiting such approval from SACAA, hopefully soon.  Despite what you may be hearing, your SAHPA team is working tirelessly behind the scenes, submitting multiple iterations of documentation and is in contact with SACAA daily.

If you do have questions, please direct these through the SAHPA office.
