Hi,

just wanted to let everyone know that we're continuing to improve the
free beta of the IBM Developer Cloud (http://www.ibm.com/cloud/
developer). Recently added are REST and Java API, instance-
independent storage, RHEL 5.4 base image, and IP address reservation.
The beta is free -- come grab a few servers and let us know what you
think!

Why do you boot a RHEL image instead of letting me bring my own image and store it?  Can I do that if I don't want RHEL?  Similar to Amazon with the generic AMI format?

Hi Billy,

image portability function is in the works and will be implemented
using one of the open image standards.

Thank you

Dima,
OK.  I think it is really important to avoid booting a "standard template" because it ruins the notion of elasticity.  If I can't store the configuration that I tested on my network on your network, and have it ready to run when the demand arrives (i.e. I can't spend 2 weeks configuring YOUR template to meet MY needs), the value of cloud disappears.

Here is an interesting post from my blog comparing the notion of Single Minute Exchange of Dies in the world of lean manufacturing with the notion of a similar Single Minute Exchange of Applications in the cloud world.  Booting your version of an application environment for my application just doesn't get the job done.

what do you think?

Billy,

understood. Devil is in the detail, so we just need to get this done
right. What are your thoughts on the cross-cloud compatibility, btw?
I recall in the early days of Friendster folks saying "In the end,
there will be just one graph" -- and that didn't happen, obviously..
Will we see many incompatible clouds, packaged with overlapping
features?

Thank you
