Hello Cloud Carbon Footprint Community,

Happy New Year! We’re excited to get right back into it, continuing to put hands to the keyboard improving Cloud Carbon Footprint and making cloud emissions measurements and reductions more possible and accessible.

As we start out this year, we’d like to share with you that one of our top priorities is to expand the methodology and tool to support the measurement of on-premise energy and emissions. This functionality will assist those without a current path to quantify infrastructure energy and emissions and/or are assessing moving to the cloud.

But, to make this happen, we need you!

Without our own on-premise usage to do research and development, we are looking for partner(s) to collaborate with so that we can build out a proof of concept solution to measuring energy and emissions.

The Ask:

  • You have significant current on-premise usage

  • You (and your organization) are willing to share data and metadata for the on-prem usage (including but not limited to: machine types and number, active power, data center location, etc.)

  • You have time to sync, collaborate, answer questions (for example, a quick weekly call and asynchronous communication)

  • You have insight and access to provide the necessary data or loop in the appropriate parties from your organization

The Gain:

  • Preliminary measurement of your on-premise energy and carbon emissions

  • Collaborating to identify a methodology specific to your usage

  • Collaborating to adapt said methodology into CCF tool

  • Ability to see your on-premise usage in CCF tool alongside any public cloud usage you may have

If you are interested or can connect us to any interested parties, please reply directly to this email (no need to reply all) or to green...@thoughtworks.com.

Thanks in advance for your help!

The Green Cloud Team

Hello, I work for a fortune 500 games company, and we are just in the process of building out dashboards and monitoring to do exactly what you are after below.
I was wondering if you would be interested in collaborating with our team. we have 4 of us working on this as an internal project in our own time who are planning to enter the result into a company wide showcase at the end of Feb.
We are engineering from central IT, Infrastructure and InfoSec teams. half the team also volunteers in our internal "green team" to drive our company to be more sustainable and we are all champions of green tech and sustainability.
please let me know ASAP if this is something that might interest you. we have a significant footprint in close to 70 countries and about 25,000 employees globally. We have an on impact billions of players a year across our games too.
many thanks
Oran.

Hello Cloud Carbon Footprint community!

TLDR: We need your feedback! If you were to have your on-premise estimates included in your CCF dashboard, what would be the most valuable ways to see your estimates displayed? Send us your existing thoughts or use the attached mock up ideas to guide your brainstorming and feedback!

As we continue into 2022, we’ve been hard at work at developing Cloud Carbon Footprint into a flexible tool for measuring your infrastructure usage and emissions. As you may be aware, we’ve been working on a new feature to optionally include on-premise machines as part of our estimates. We will be including the early implementation of this feature in our upcoming release to allow the output of on-premise estimates to be included in a CSV file.

As part of our next phase of this feature, we are considering what it might look like to include these estimates and additional analysis as part of the main dashboard.

This is where we value and request your amazing ideas and feedback!

Attached below are early explorations of what this implementation could look like. We are keen to hear your feedback on the ideas presented and any additional ideas you have.
Some things to consider may be:

  • What metrics and totals would be most useful?

  • What type of analysis would you look to do and what breakdowns would support that?

  • What comparisons or insights would be helpful in decision making?

If you have ideas, questions, or feedback, feel free to reply to this post or reach out to our team directly.

We want to ensure that we are designing this display with you, our community and users, to ensure we deliver the most impactful experience for our users with on-premise usage.

Thank you!

Hello - we are interested in working on this as we are currently working with clients in this area.

Hi Alpesh,

Thanks for reaching out. A great first step would provide any feedback you have on our mockups and our V1 implementation.
We appreciate your input!

Cheers,

Hello Cloud Carbon Footprint Team !

I'm interested to display my on-premises results into my app with real data.

The metrics I would like to see :
  • classic metrics as CO2eq. & kiloWattHours (1st image proposition)
  • number of hosts (3rd image proposition)
  • comparison between on-premise CO2eq. and Cloud provider (6th and 7th image proposition)

It could be good to add a column on the 5th image to see the name of the physical Host.
Example :

Agent CPU id | Physical server name | machine Type | % of use | Co2eq (per hour, per day, per month)
I'm not interested to know in the reporting, which CPU i use.

I will be interested to know, how to measure CO2eq consumption for physical Firewall, switchs, wifi router & if possible the CO2 equivalent for 150Go (or more) of files/folder data transfered from US to Europe (or another destination in the world).

Thank you :)

And also for the csv model for on-premise estimation, I have a lot of clusters, a lot of physical hosts & a lot of VM that shared the same name of CPU Model.
It's difficult for me to identify which hosts belongs to which Business Sector in my company with a CPU tag... I tried to rename machineName with a host name and it calculated a difference between CO2e results.

The CSV Data Model should add a raw like this :

Name                                        |Type      |Description
cpuDescription                       | string    | Central processing unit description
machineName                         |string     | Physical host name
memory                                    |number  | Number of gigabytes of memory usage
machineType                           |string     | Machine type (Ie. server, laptop, desktop)
startTime                                  |Date       | Timestamp recording the start day/time of usage
endTime                                    |Date       | Timestamp recording end day/time of usage
country                                      |string     | Country where server was located
region                                         |string     | Region or state within country server was located
cost?                                          |number   | The amount of cost associated with each row
cpuUtilization?                         |number   | Specific server utilization percentage (Ie. 50% = 50)
powerUsageEffectiveness?   |number   | Power usage effectiveness for data center
