The University Registrar establishes the official calendar followed by the University of South Carolina system. Access the full current and upcoming semester academic calendars to find key dates and information including holidays, registration dates, payment deadlines, drop or add dates, exams and commencement for each term.
Reminder: No school December 21st through January 2nd, for Winter Break. Students will report back to school Wednesday, January 3rd. Have a safe and wonderful break! MMSD thanks you for all your support.
The school calendar is developed collaboratively with SEA and the dates are agreed upon in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The formula to schedule key dates in the CBA states that the first day of school will be the first Wednesday of September.
During the 2019 bargaining period, multiple joint workgroups between SPS and SEA were established, with one specifically organized to address inclusive considerations related to religious and cultural observations and practices. This workgroup developed supplemental materials and guidance to go along with the traditional school year calendar.
While not all religious/cultural events can be accommodated for, this guidance was created to serve as a reference for schools, families, and communities to be aware of potential schedule conflicts and excused absences and/or to make appropriate accommodations and supports for students and families on days of religious/cultural observances.
The academic calendar is subject to change without notice. In preparing the calendar for an academic year, it is impossible to avoid conflict with some religious holidays. As conflicts arise, efforts are made to make special arrangements for students affected.
Every two years, the Calendar Committee distributes the calendar survey, asking our community to provide information about your priorities and values in a school year calendar. Please keep in mind that this survey is only intended to gather information. Participation in this survey is not a vote on a specific calendar.
PSD's Calendar Committee will use a variety of data and information, including this survey data, to make determinations about what calendar for the 2024-25 school year to recommend for adoption to the Board of Education. This recommended calendar for the next school year will be presented to the board for approval in November 2023.
The Calendar Committee includes representatives from schools, teachers, classified staff and parents. Those interested in serving on the Calendar Committee are welcome to contact Co-Chairs Alicia Bono and Melanie Mierzwa for more information. This committee wants to be as inclusive as possible and consider the many perspectives in our PSD communities. Members of the 2022-23 committee:
The University considers multiple factors in setting the academic calendar, including efforts to avoid conflicts between major religious holidays and "Move-In" dates for campus resident halls. See University of California policy.
The academic calendar is divided into fall and spring semesters of approximately 15 weeks each and summer sessions of varying length. The last week of the fall and spring semesters is set aside for final examinations. The academic calendar for the Washington College of Law (WCL) of American University varies from this general schedule. For the full WCL academic calendar, please go to:
NEISD offers multiple ways for students to garner their education, including a choice of campuses that provide traditional, year-round*, and extended school year* calendars. If you would like your student to attend a specific campus outside of your immediate area, you may apply for School Choice through the NEISD School Choice application process.
NEISD is designated as a District of Innovation and utilizes 180 instructional days for all district calendars to meet the needs of our students. Calendar development considerations include but are not limited to:
NEISD established an adoption process that provides two calendar options to the District Educational Improvement Council (DEIC), Elementary, and Secondary campuses for review. NEISD campuses select the district calendar through an internal campus voting process and submit their final vote to the district. The calendar with the most votes is presented to the NEISD school board and reviewed for approval. Once the district calendar is board approved, all other NEISD calendars are submitted and presented for board approval.
Castle Hills Elementary provides the year-round school calendar option for NEISD students, with 180 instructional days and two intersession breaks throughout the year. Intersession breaks are designed to provide students academic enrichment and instructional support.
Jackson-Keller, Larkspur, and Serna Elementary provide the extended school year option for NEISD students. The calendar includes 180 instructional days with four intersessions throughout the year - one in the fall and three in the spring. Intersession breaks are designed to provide students with academic enrichment and instructional support.
