Shadow CLJS won't connect to js runtime after lein release

I'm using the latest re-frame template:

lein new re-frame test-app +cider +handler +routes

I run

lein watch

and then I can connect through cider.

But once I run

lein release

to compile production javascript, I can no longer connect to the browser repl unless I blow away everything shadow related in the project folder and do a new

lein watch

Any insights are appreciated.
