Hello friends,

Firstly, thank you that everyone who came out for our second meetup last week.

Nextly, we want you to unleash your knowledge onto the group during our next meetup. Submit a proposal by emailing Matt or myself directly with:

Name of the talk
(short) Description (just 2 sentences to clarify what you're talking about)
Time How long would you like the stage? This is the most important part because:

A) Talks will be sorted by time in descending order (shortest first).
B) You will be cut off when your time is up.

You can email us at any point before the meetup on October 16 @ 6pm with a talk idea.

TIPS

0. Don't be afraid, everyone is nervous about public speaking but we are nice people :)
1. Practice beforehand. Has a shocking success rate (and I always forget this to my own detriment).
2. Don't live code. Seriously, it can only not go poorly and there are too many easy screencast tools out there (or just keynote animations) for it not to be prerecorded.
3. Pictures can say a lot more, with less explanation, then a block of text (or code)

If you have any tips for aspiring speakers, send them to the group!

Hi,

So, are we still meeting? If so, then are we having lightning talks in the future?

I can do something for a lightning talk (in fact I can think of 3 off the top of my head), but I notice that you said, "emailing Matt or myself directly", which is tricky without your addresses.

Something else that came up recently was the idea of mentoring. I've seen at the meetings that there are all sorts of levels of experience, both in terms of Clojure, and programming in general. The thing that has helped me learn things the most has always been when someone has taken the time to sit down with me to explain how something works. This made me think... what if we had an evening where a number of us put up our hands to say we know about something (e.g. Leiningen, Ring, Datomic, Monads) and offer to sit down with a couple of people at a time to have a kind of hands-on Q&A. Limit the time to, say, 20 minutes, and have people rotate around. The idea would be to provide some cross-pollination of what we've learned, while also getting to know some of the people in the group.

I have no idea if that would work, but it's an idea.  :-)

Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to our next meeting. I was very sick on the night of the last one, and was very disappointed to not make it.

Regards,
Paul

I'd be up for that. I can talk about Clojure in general, and about Datomic.
