Friend UI with generic SQL account backend -- help?

I'm working on a generic UI** and easy set up way for people to use Friend with any SQL DB for accounts.

Login appears to work, but authorization (user type) does not. No errors are thrown. Is there any way to debug it -- do I just need to use ring-mock?

I realize you're all very busy, but any small pointer would be appreciated.
