For those not on Ruby-Ireland... (http://groups.google.com/group/ruby_ireland)
There's a distributed book-group forming, dedicated to "Structure and
Interpretation of Computer Programming"
The online group: http://groups.google.com/group/anglo-celt-sicp-study-group
The book: http://mitpress.mit.edu/sicp/
In short, the idea is to cover a section of the book (and do the
exercises) every fortnight--then meet on Skype for a discussion.
Over on Ruby-Ireland, I suggested a switch from Scheme to Clojure. The
group has come out against this move.
If you're interested in covering the foundations of functional
programming (through another LISP), it may still hold some interest.
Kevin.
The book-group for SICP (http://mitpress.mit.edu/sicp/) has grown to
over two dozen, which would be unmanageable for a single
conference-call.
It's going to sub-divide (based on factors like preferred
meeting-time, location and language choice).
And there's a minority interested in doing the exercises in SICP
through Clojure.
If you're interested, join the group:

And do the short survey, with a vote for Clojure:
