You may want to look at Vanguard Software.
They offer a powerful tool for building web based expert systems

Check it out at :
www.vanguardsw.com/solutions/application/expert-systems/
and
www.vanguardsw.com/products/knowledge-automation-system/expert-systems.htm

The system is easy to use and maintain. It's specifically designed
for
the web - both for the end-users as well as the designers, and you
have full control over the look and feel of the web presentation to
the end-user.

If you do take a look I'd be interested to hear your opinions.
We work closely with Vanguard and any feedback would be welcome.

I have used clips for doing some AI work from an online GUI as a batch in the background.

I have the 'clipsdos'  executable, V6.23, this should be avalable on the www somewhere.

1. use the GUI (java and/or ruby, done both) to write a DOS bat file. It contains something like:
          "clipsdos  -f Rules.clips >RunTrace.dat"

2. All the clips code is in the Rule.clips file listed above.

3. in Java use the Runtime class to execute that file and wait for the process to end. In ruby use the "system"  command.

4. Each rule that fires executes an assert the has the string "INFO" within it, like '( printout t "( INFO this-is-data me-too )" crlf )'

5. After the clips program executes the GUI can read the output file RunTrace.dat and use the Java Scanner class to read the lines with the INFO on it (lots of other crap in this trace file). That gets the new facts into the GUI.

Maybe I have to blow the dust off this code and play again.
