"The Evolving Radical Right in the Early Twenty-First Century - Liberty Under Siege"

Among the contributors are Prof. Vamik Volkan, an internationally acclaimed psychoanalyst and conflict-resolution scholar, Prof. Hans-Jürgen Wirth, a very well known German psychoanalyst, and founder of the "Psychosozial Verlag", which publishes almost all books related to social psychology and psychoanalysis in Germany, Prof. Roland Gori, a well know psychoanalyst and writer in France, Prof. Cas Mudde, the most cited scholar on the subject, Prof. Roger Griffin, one of the world’s leading scholars of fascism, Prof. Nicolas Lebourg, a leading French expert on the radical right, Prof. Hamit Bozarslan, a French/Turkisch politist and historian, expert on the Middle East - and many other very interesting authors.

Below are a presentation of the book by Routledge, the table of contents, and in attached a flyer which offers 20% of discount for the purchase of the book on their website.

Presentation : "This book investigates the dynamics of expansion and normalization of the radical right in the early twenty-first century. The radical right’s popularity with voters dramatically increased, it even enabled twice the election of Trump as a chief executive in the United States. The main focus of this volume is on the forces in a variety of nations where this occurred, and why this phenomenon happened at this point in history. This book illustrates both the diversity and commonality of the radical right. It is multidisciplinary and international. It examines the topic of the radical right resurgence from the perspectives of history, economics, political sciences, law, sociology, and applied psychoanalysis. It is comparative in that the radical right is discussed from the national perspective of the United States, France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Iran, and Russia. It relies on empirical and theoretical outlooks to make sense of a complex subject matter."

Brigitte and Ken,

I purchased your book. I don't see the word "war" in your index.  If this topic comes up in any of your chapters, which one(s)?

Thanks,

Brian

Thanks for your interest, Brian,

Routledge did the index, and indeed the word "war" is not in the index, despite the fact that some of the contributions deal with WWII (chapter 4 and 16 especially) and that the words "genocide" and "holocaust" are in the index.

Maybe Ken has something more to say about this.

Best

Brigitte

Brian,

War is not discussed in our book on the evolving radical right. When we turned in the manuscript the populist radical
right in western and Central Europe,  outside of Ukraine,  and the U S were neither attacked nor attacking. The U S gave substantial aid to Ukraine but did not formally declare war. As the populist radical right at the time of our manuscript submission scholars agree was preoccupied with immigration as their central concern. The evolving radical right in Europe got more votes in recent elections than other parties and twice elected Trump as President. They were doing well at the polls.

The most cited scholar on the radical right is Cas Mudde. I recommend you read his contribution. We also have the foremost expert on Fascism, British historian Roger Griffin. French historian Nicolas Lebourg  another of our contributors, is co-author of a book on the far right in Europe, that has been translated into English. Contributor Lawrence Rosenthal of UC Berkeley finds a consensus that immigration is the central issue  uniting the populist radical right.
If you get a chance to read their contributions you will get a grasp on the  concerns of the evolving radical right and it may help you see why at the time of submission war was not a central concern. Since then Trump has initiated the Iran war and threatens Cuba. But we turned in our text before then.  Furthermore the leaders of the French radical right opposed the Iran war. The rightest Italian government has kept its distance from Trump’s Iran war. As did Great Britain.

Thank you, Brigitte and Ken.  Consistent with what you say, Ken, I would only add that the radical right in the United States (e.g. MAGA) seems to combine militarists and isolationists.  Trump appealed to the isolationists in his 2024 campaign by saying he would not get the country into foreign wars, and then reneged on his promise as politicians often do.
