Dear all,

It seems that things are coming to a head in US politics.  In midterm elections (in between presidential election years), the party that holds the White House almost always loses seats in the Senate and/or House of Representatives.  If that happens this year, it will not be because of the normal operation of democracy, but because Republicans are pushing through restrictive voting laws in many states throughout the country.  This is legitimized by Trump's Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him. On the Republican Party's transformation into a cult of Trump, see Michelle Cottle's outstanding "The Nation Needs a Reality-Based G.O.P. Only the Kook Caucus Is Stepping Up" https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/08/opinion/republican-party-crisis.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage  All of this may produce an historic backlash, fueled especially by the African American community, which has seen this attack on their voting rights many times before. We could see record voter turnout in 2022 if the election becomes correctly understood as a referendum on whether the country is going to be democratic or fascist for the coming decade or longer.  In that case, the historic pattern may be reversed and the party holding the White House could actually gain, rather than lose, in the Congressional elections.  I am hopeful that this will in fact occur, but it is going to be a titanic struggle and the outcome is really impossible to predict.  Your thoughts?
