Good meeting! Hopefully it will lead to collaboration with MARP and eventually a BQE dog run!

I've just joined this group after attending this evening's small
meeting under the BQE. I think the meeting went well!

I'm encouraged to see that MARP (Myrtle Ave Revitalization Project
http://www.myrtleavenue.org/aboutus.cfm) is seriously considering
adding a dog run to the amenities that it plans/hopes to develop
underneath the BQE elevated highway on Park Avenue.

I understood from the meeting that MARP is hoping to see a strong
showing of support from this group during MARP's upcoming community
planning process for the space under the BQE. If I understood them
correctly, I think the MARP representatives (M. Blaise Backer -
Executive Director; Meredith Phillips Almeida - Director, Community
Development) said they'd like to help our group by including us in
their plans; of course in exchange I am sure that MARP would like us
to rally around their planning process and support them as they work
with NYC DOT and other officials to develop the space under the bridge
(which apparently belongs to NYC DOT).

MARP mentioned that if a dog run were planned and developed under the
bridge (they said it could happen quite quickly once their overall
under-bridge development project is underway), then this group would
need to organize a permanent support system to fund and/or volunteer
maintenance, for as long as the dog run shall stand. They also said
this group would definitely need to participate actively in designing,
and perhaps in constructing, the dog run. (This seemed to agree with
Stephanie's description of her research findings for founding a new
dog run in NYC.)

NYC DOT is actively working to "green" its properties (i.e. streets
and other paved public land) all around the city.

MARP seems to think the dog run, and the larger idea of community
space under the bridge, are exemplary of the type of projects NYC DOT
has been pursuing (so they think their general community development
plans for the space are likely to happen). But they said that not many
such under-bridge spaces have already been developed around NYC, so
this BQE space may be forging a new path.

Attendees at today's meeting expressed a variety of suggestions and
concerns about the location and the amenities that would be optimal.

I hope that the members of this organization come together to support
MARP in its community planning process - it sounds like they're
offering us a dog run! In that case, this group should agree to the
best possible suitable amenities and location for such a BQE dog run,
rather than (or in addition to) pursuing other possible dog run
locations in nearby Parks. If I understood Stephanie's remarks
correctly, there are no Parks readily available for dog run use - in
other words, this BQE dog run offers the most likely prospect for
success!

As I said, I'm new to the group and the cause. I had heard of today's
meeting, and this group, through ClintonHillBlog.

P.S. Another thought: perhaps this group should do a "membership
drive" (have you already done that recently?) to get out the word and
expand the 61-member mailing list. That way this group would represent
a larger number of interested dog owners. How would it work?
Basically, all 61 members would ask their local friends and neighbors,
who own dogs, to join the list. That way this group could better rally
support for MARP community planning, in exchange for MARP including a
half-block of fenced dog run in the plans!

I think a membership drive is a great idea. I had tried to do this
when I first started the group, but ran into some difficulty with
getting people to actually join. I spoke to dozens of people in person
who seemed genuinely interested, but then once they got home never
actually joined the group. Not sure what to do about this.

In general I'm looking forward to working with you all to get this
done. I think it could be a great addition to the community.

Has there ever been an attempt to market the group a little more?
Maybe some simply postings in coffee shops like Tillie's and
Bittersweet could help to increase our numbers (and support).

I had started on a marketing push. I had a friend design a logo, and
registered the website.

both are at:

http://clintonhilldogrun.org/

I had planned to print up flyers but had to drop the project because
of other commitments. I might be able to put together a flyer, but I
can't promise how soon I can get to it. Is there anyone out there with
design experience who can get to it sooner?
