Just joined this group so greatly appreciate it if someone can give me
the history of why not in Fort Greene Park? I love the off-leash
hours, but it would be great to have an alternative when I cannot make
it to the park before 9 am. Seems like there is plenty of room. Can
you fill me in?

I am amazed by all of the great ideas that have surfaced. We clearly need to and cab make this happen.

There are multiple options on the table for which to rally.

I would like to strongly suggest the area in Underwood Park/Playground. The park is around Washington and Dekalb. There are multiple entrances (meaning dogs and humans can enter in a way that never crosses the people using the playground).

There is a large, jowl drooling space in that park (in area I would estimate it is at least 1/3 of the park and maybe 3/4 of an acre or more). Even better, the fencing is already a dog-run style. It is tall and has narrow spacing. The area is currently designated as a garden. It has one or two rose bushes (1/100th of the space) and is essentially never used.

I would like to see that area turned into a dog run. It is a convenient location, it could be a potentially stellar example of a true multi-purpose park, and it seems to me it requires almost no money to make it function and to start quickly.

There may be some opposition from users if the playground. I would like to be clear to everyone using the playground, the parks department, and city council that we dog owners appreciate those concerns but that there essentially every concern can be addressed at this location to the extent that I would be hard pressed to believe any reason that says no.

I am unclear where this idea stands in the discussions. I would like to know what other folks feel about this option.

If it seems worthwhile and supported, I will volunteer to speerhead the initiative; if someone else is already doing so, I would like to humbly offer my support.

I would greatly appreciate feedback and advice. I admire and fully support the other initiatives, but this is one I'd like to push right now.

Cheers,
James

my pup and I also drooled over that space but Tish is not in support of that conversion.  She thinks there are several day-cares that use that grass during the day.  I have seen kids running in there on the weekend in the summer with water-guns.  I really really love that space but Tish doesn't want us to try for it. Without her support we wont get anywhere.

This is where we are so far:
Tish doesnt support us getting a run at-
Tryon - b/c of day cares using space

fort green - not enough space b/c park is "over used" in summer & free run exists and many people support it and will fight us for it b/c if the parks gives us a run we will loose free run

cuyler gore - cant use b/c at some point in the past seniors were against it even-though its already sectioned off and "people" aren't even allowed in those sections at this time & the sections already dont have grass b/c the trees are too shady & there is already plumbing (for a hose but could easily be turned into a drinking fountain)

the triangle near bam (name?) - covered in ivy which is poisonous & too landscaped plus busy intersection and trashy

Tish supports us getting a run at-
steuben - park already has a budget for any project that comes along, but 1 or 2 people dont want it to happen, plus the group is unenthusiastic about the location

commedore barry- the group is unenthusiastic about the location

"under the BQE"- not parks land h/e DOT will let Parks use & maintain it.  Tish did a walk thru under the full stretch of recently maintained space under BQE & DOT ok will giving to parks to use.  Parks ok with it too.  Tish is about to request a budget for this.  Parks will design a run for a section of park under BQE for all weather dog run purposes.  Hopefully it will be somewhere near the midpoint of the width of the BQE "dip" under the navy yard.  If this goes thru, we may have to form a "group" who will be charged with maintaining it weekly.  We will not have to pay for things but we will be the eyes and light hands for the parks dept.  we will tell them when things break or drains clog but will be the ones picking up the poop or volunteering on the "mulch spreading day" etc  This will be the deal for all runs actually.  Have you guys seen the new lights under the BQE?  Or the stop lights and cross walks on the north side?  or the recently sandblasted and repainted columns? things are looking good over there.  I just ope the hood doesnt get too used to their new clean bright safe parking area over there and protest if/when parks breaks ground on our dog run.  Good thing we asked first!  I think a lot of that stretch will be used as community space.  We shall see.

So if I understand correctly, under the BQE seems like the most
viable, likely option. DOT did a great job improving that stretch
along Park Ave and with some additional improvement, a dog run would
put the site to great use. I am positive that many people in the
neighborhood (with dogs and even without) would be willing to support
a run under the BQE. I am definitely willing to help garner support.
Let me know how I can help.

Yes, Stephanie, thanks so much for all your hard work. I, for one, am
very excited that the BQE option looks so close to fruition. I'm not
sure what area you guys are referring to (what are the cross streets?)
but it sounds like it will be a wonderful option for those of us who
would like to have our dogs in a safe, enclosed space and be able to
go off leash during the day.

Please keep us updated and let us know if there is anything we can do to help!

Once the Parks department signs off on the dog run, however, won't we need volunteers to maintain it?  Do you think it would be practicable to compile a list of potential volunteers, and to ask current members interested in volunteering to try and recruit additional dog-run volunteers?
