Detective Comics was the final publication of the entrepreneur Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, whose comics company, National Allied Publications, would evolve into DC Comics, one of the world's two largest comic book publishers, though long after its founder had left it. Wheeler-Nicholson's first two titles were the landmark New Fun: The Big Comic-Magazine #1 (cover-dated Feb. 1935), colloquially called New Fun Comics #1 and the first such early comic book to contain all-original content, rather than a mix of newspaper comic strips and comic-strip-style new material. His second effort, New Comics #1, would be retitled twice to become Adventure Comics, another seminal series that ran for decades until issue #503 in 1983, and was later revived in 2009.

Originally an anthology comic, in the manner of the times, Detective Comics #1 (March 1937) featured stories in the "hard-boiled detective" genre, with such stars as Ching Lung (a Fu Manchu-style "Yellow Peril" villain); Slam Bradley (created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster before their character Superman saw print two years later); and Speed Saunders, among others. Its first editor, Vin Sullivan, also drew the debut issue's cover. The Crimson Avenger debuted in issue #20 (October 1938).[3]

The first issue of the relaunched Detective Comics has received six printings, second only to the relaunched Justice League which had seven printings.[73] The series' 7th issue was also DC Comic's 6th highest selling digital comic, ranking above many other series in the Batman category.[74] Scott West of Sciencefiction.com gave the series' third arc a positive review, stating that "After last month's disappointing 'Night of the Owls' tie-in issue, it's nice to see 'Detective Comics' getting back to where it should be...good detective stories."[75] The relaunched Detective Comics received the award for "Best Series" at the 2012 Stan Lee Awards.[76] The series' first collected edition would reach the number 1 spot on The New York Times Best Seller list in the category of "Hardcover Graphic Books".[77]

The title began its life as an anthology series, mostly featuring just what the title and the times promised: detective stories of the 'hard-boiled' variety, with no superheroes, as such, appearing for the first 26 issues.

Detective Comics is a DC Comics monthly comic book published since 1937, focusing on detective stories. One of DC's signature titles; the title featured early talents such as Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, Bob Kane, Sheldon Moldoff, Jerry Robinson and Bill Finger. Detective characters, such as Slam Bradley and the Crimson Avenger, were featured monthly in its early days. As of issue #27, the title became best known for the introduction of the Superhero Detective, The Batman, who eventually became the main feature. The title has also featured the debuts of Dick Grayson, James Gordon and many of Batman's villains and supporting cast, as well as other DC characters.

Detective Comics #1 featured stories using the hard-boiled detective genre, which was popular around that time. Some of the better-known characters in this publication were Slam Bradley, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster before they created the Superman character, Ching Lung, an Asian character who was a villain; and Speed Saunders along with other characters. The debut cover was created by Vin Sullivan, who was the publication's first editor.

The comic started out as an anthology comic with each issue containing several unrelated adventures. The first issue introduced a mix of two-fisted sleuths with names like "Slam" Bradley and "Speed" Saunders as well as more exotic detectives like "Cosmo, the Phantom of Disguise". Slam Bradley, one of the title's early stars, was created (from an initial character outline by the editor, Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson) by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, not yet famous as the creators of Superman. He still shows up in DC Comics from time to time, usually when a writer wants to make a point about how comics have changed over the years.

The series has gone through several different incarnations over the years. In 1978, when on the verge of cancellation, it was merged with the comic title Batman Family. Over 1981-1986 the series had the same writers as the main Batman title and the two were in permanent crossover, essentially functioning as a single series published twice-monthly. Following the Batman: No Man's Land crossover story, Detective Comics was distinguished from the other Batman titles by its focus on smaller-scale and more realistic detective stories. In 2009-2010, during a period where Batman was supposedly dead, Batwoman temporarily became the headline character, reverting back to Batman when he returned.

DC Comics was founded in 1934 by Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, following his departure from the army. Originally launched as National Allied Publications, the company pioneered the concept of a comics featuring entirely original content. Previously comic books sold in stories reprinted old strips from the newspaper. Its first title was New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine. It was released in February 1935, was a 10-inch by 15-inch anthology that bared little resemblance to the modern books it publishes today.

Aside from the appearance of proto-superhero The Crimson Avenger (he wore a mask), Detective Comics, a very early title for National/DC premiering in 1937, was just that - a book that featured various gritty-detective stories.

Bob Kane's creation was like no other before it, with its protagonist having a complicated and tragic back story - territory not really seen in comics before that. Millionaire Bruce Wayne was a dark, brooding, figure who had witnessed the murder of his parents as a young boy. Obsessed with finding a way to serve justice, he assumed the identity of The Batman, and generally went after his criminal prey during the night...

People loved it, and it quickly became a best-seller. Detective, however never really let go of it's more conventional detective co-features, but did, with time, start featuring supporting stories of The Boy Commandos and the criminally underrated hero Air Wave.
