If you've ever used small screws in hardwood then you've probably experienced the joy of broken screws! Most likely you were installing a hinge and need to place another screw in the exact location of the broken screw. What do you do now? Having faced this dilemma multiple times I came up with this a simple extractor which works quickly to remove the screw while allowing you to plug the hole and try again. Similar extractor are available for purchase however they break easily and commonly only add to your frustration. This tool is robust, cuts cleanly and will last for a long time. Let me show you how to make it.

When I initially tried out the extractor I had made I was quite disappointed as it didn't cut at all. I finally realized when I ground the tips I made it backwards. If you look closely at the pictures you can see the point of the each tooth is on the left and can only cut when the drill is spinning backwards. When I reversed the direction on my drill it cut like a champ! It works so well I've never bothered to make another and how to use it is a tightly held shop secret. Keeps it from walking off!

To extract the screw simply drill with your mini hole saw around the screw end. To do this you need a 1/4" socket adaptor chucked up in your drill to accept the socket. I have found that a shallow 17/64" hole drilled over the broken screw really helps to keep the extractor from wandering (not pictured). As you can see in the 3rd picture this little tool drills a very clean hole. Continue drilling until you feel the screw loosen and remove it.

Now that your broken screw is removed you can simply plug the hole with a 1/4" hardwood dowel and try again. I primarily have used this little extractor when installing piano hinges. The beauty is the piano hinge covers the dowel completely so this quick repair is not visible on your finished project.

To avoid using this extractor my best tip is to drill a pilot hole and use a good quality steel screw to thread each hole before installing the brass screws. Small steel screws are much harder to break and this avoids messing around with repairs.

I hope you will make this little extractor and keep it handy in your shop. You still won't enjoy breaking screws but at least you can avoid freaking out about it. I hope this instructable was helpful. Thanks for reading it.

A screw extractor is a tool for removing broken or seized screws. There are two types: one has a spiral flute structure, commonly called an easy out after the trademarked name EZ-Out;[clarification needed] the other has a straight flute structure.[1]

A spiral screw extractor is itself a coarse-pitched tapered screw thread. They are generally left-handed, for use on right-handed threads, though there are right-handed extractors for removing left-handed screws. The screw is first drilled out to the proper diameter for that extractor. The extractor is then inserted into this hole and turned in the direction opposing the stuck screw's original one, usually using a tap wrench. As the extractor is turned, the flutes on the tool dig into the screw, causing it to lock tightly and withstand the applied torque required to remove the screw.[1] A drawback to tapered screw extractors is that their wedge action tends to expand the drilled, and thus weakened, screw. This wedging action can lock the screw even more tightly in place, making it difficult or impossible to extract.

Straight fluted extractors may come in a kit that also has associated drills, drill bushings, and special nuts, or be sold individually. The screw is drilled out with the appropriate drill and drill bushing. The extractor is then hammered into the hole with a brass hammer, because a steel hammer is more likely to cause the extractor to break. The appropriate special nut is then attached to the end of the extractor. The nuts can then be turned with a wrench to remove the screw.[1] Straight fluted extractors have less wedging effect than tapered screw extractors, so have less tendency to lock the screws into place. A further form is a parallel fluted extractor, with no taper at all and thus no wedging. These work well, but have the drawback of requiring the pilot hole to be drilled to a precise size. This size is often non-standard for most drill sets, requiring a dedicated drill bit to be supplied with the kit.

A tool analogous to a screw extractor, but for removing a seized or rounded off nut from a bolt, is a nut extractor, which has tapered, spiral flutes like a screw extractor, but located internally in the tool, not externally. These flutes or grooves grip the rounded nut from the outside, rather than being driven into the hollowed out screw shaft and taking hold of it internally as a screw extractor would.[2]

Screw extractors (often called Easy out's) have limited success when being used to removed sheared off studs or bolts- sometimes they work and sometimes they do not. Before trying to use the screw extractor you could also try Remove a broken bolt using a left handed drill bit or Remove a broken bolt using a welder

This is a set of screw extractors/easyout's. Your success with these extractors depends on a few factors but in some instances they will work. Screw extractors have a left hand thread on them, so when turned anti-clockwise they grip the bolt and remove it.

Now drill a hole in the dead centre of the bolt. The hole size depends on the size of the screw extractor. You should always use the largest screw extractor that you can, but the drilled hole needs to be smaller than the screw extractor for it to bite.

Using a suitable wrench turn the screw extractor anti-clockwise and if you are lucky the broken bolt will be removed. Be extremely careful as a broken screw extractor or drill bit is even more difficult to remove.
