debate on glacier and glacial lake database

I being one of the co-authors and involved in preparing
glacial lakes and glaciers database for the ICIMOD
publication on Bhutan, felt necessary to share the
significance of our work in generating awareness on
threats and opportunities of “white gold”.
It is just a one time database, and one of the first of
its kind and definitely with space for improvement. There
is no doubt publication was well received by researchers
and professionals in Bhutan and has been extensively
referred. It has proved very helpful in generating
awareness among policy makers, professionals and to some
extend general public since it provides in a very
comprehensive manner the situation in the higher latitude.
This has been brought about by the fact that database is
freely available for those interested. The publication has
also been catalytic in initiating more glacial lakes and
glaciers monitoring activities in Bhutan. In addition, it
was well received by international friends who worked with
us in this field and has been referred by many in their
works.
Despite some limitations this publication has been a great
success and an achievement.
