sherwood forest NP.jpgMore than 300 people came from all over the region on Saturday to stage a demonstration against the fracking firm Ineos requests to carry out surveys for shale gas at Sherwood Forest.

It comes after Friends of the Earth said a Freedom of Information request showed the land surveyors for chemicals company Ineos have been in contact with the Forestry Commission since August regarding accessing its land.

The land owners of Sherwood Forest have confirmed they have been approached over seismic surveys, but say they will not agree to fracking on the site. Seismic surveys are the first step in prospecting for shale gas, which can lead to the controversial fracking method of extracting gas from the earth.

Friends of the Earth and campaign group Frack Free Nottinghamshire organised the demonstration to highlight how important the historical site is.

The  photo below shows Peter from Derby Climate Coalition speaking at the rally, saying "there is no such thing as safe fracking because , regardless all the other damage it does to the environment, fracking adds to greenhouse gases and climate change".
