Dear Climate Action supporters

There are so many ways to help turn the 'fossil fuel ship' around - here is one from the Northern Territory where First Nations and environmentalists are campaigning hard to stop fracking in NT. Write to the NT government saying what they do affects us all.

Hi Everyone,

We are reaching out to stakeholders around Australia who are concerned about the climate impacts of fracking and strongly encourage you to respond to the Northern Territory Government’s Draft Greenhouse Gas Emissions Offsets Policy.

The landmark 2018 Pepper Inquiry recommended that lifecycle emissions in Australia from fracking shale gas in the Territory be completely offset. The Northern Territory Government’s Draft Policy, for which they are currently seeking submissions, retreats from this recommendation. It contains no concrete mechanisms to ensure that fracking emissions will be completely offset, and furthermore it paves the way for gas and petroleum companies to fund research into Carbon Capture and Storage as a way to satisfy their emissions offsets obligations.

Emissions from the proposed Beetaloo and Barossa gas projects would not only make it impossible for the Northern Territory to reach its target of net zero emissions by 2050 but would jeopardise Australia’s ability to meet its emissions reduction commitments. There are projected estimates that fracking the Beetaloo alone could produce up to 117 million tonnes of greenhouse gas each year, almost a quarter of Australia’s current annual emissions. It is important that the Northern Territory Government receives a variety of informed submissions about this policy, as their retreat from recommendation 9.8 of the Pepper Inquiry would represent the loss of a key mechanism to prevent the progression of these major fracking projects.

The Environment Centre NT has prepared a detailed submission writing guide specifically for this draft policy, which can be accessed here. Submissions are due on October 15, and should be sent to environme...@nt.gov.au .

You can download the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Offsets Policy and Technical Guidelines document here.

If you don't have time to read the submission guide, simply writing why proper climate action is important to you and urging the NT Government to scrap in-direct offsets for research and development, will make an enormous difference.
We have not done an online petition, as these are ignored. A submission with a personal story and this one recommendation, will make a difference.

Thank you for your attention and support.

Warmest regards,

Shar
