Dear All,

We are excited to invite you to the next session of the IMRR UNESCO Chair & SIMR Webinar Series on Feb 12, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM (UK Time GMT).

Topic: Flash Floods: Challenges and Needs for Mitigation and Adaptation.

Speaker: Prof. Philippe Gourbesville, Prof., Université Côte d'Azur, France & Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, China; President of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR).

Event Details & Registration: more details can be found Here

Webinar Overview: In recent decades, flash floods have become a major natural disaster and show a continuously increasing trend on a worldwide scale. Most of the recent events are generated by severe convective storms (SCS) that are becoming more frequent under climate change. The magnitude of the damages associated with flash floods has massively increased and is currently ranked at the first position by reinsurance companies. Efforts for mitigating effects of flash floods and adaptation strategies are deeply needed to reduced vulnerability of exposed populations. The presentation will review several recent catastrophic events observed around the world, identify some key lessons learned, underline the needs regarding early warning procedures and assess the efficiency of various modelling approaches that could be deployed to anticipate major events.

Speaker Highlight: Prof. Philippe Gourbesville is a distinguished professor of Hydroinformatics at Polytech Nice Sophia, Université Côte d’Azur, France, with extensive expertise in hydro-environmental modelling and water management. Since joining Université Côte d’Azur in 1997, he has led numerous research projects on hydro-environmental modelling, contributing to 16 European Commission projects in roles such as member, work package leader, and coordinator. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Tianjin International Engineering Institute (TIEI) at Tianjin University in China, which became the first Chinese institution accredited by the French Government for awarding the engineer title. Additionally, he has been a trusted advisor to international institutions and public bodies on water-related challenges. As a co-founder and Vice President of the Asian Water Council (AWC) since 2015, he has actively promoted innovative solutions to water issues in Asia. In 2022, Philippe was elected President of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR).
