Session Title: GC049: Eye Candy or Eye Sore? The Technical and Philosophical Challenges of High-Resolution Climate Data Product Development
Section: Global Environmental Change
Conveners: Stefan Rahimi, Alan Rhoades, Melissa Bukovsky, Manuela Girotto, and David Lafferty
Abstract: Be frank, where is your climate dataset good? Where is it bad? Whether produced dynamically, statistically, via machine learning, and/or through hybrid techniques, or whether it's observationally-constrained, we solicit presentations that “air the dirty laundry” of the growing number of high-resolution climate products that are being produced and used across key sectors to support decision-making. We encourage presenters to discuss philosophical dataset construction breakthroughs and challenges, such as when and where to apply bias correction, how to preserve trends in forcing datasets (or when not to if they are systematically biased), and/or how to go about ESM selection for downscaling. If you intend to present, please be ready to share the good, the bad, and the ugly about your data product and where and when it should or shouldn't be applied in decision-making contexts!
