Dear Colleagues,
The Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and AI, is seeking two experienced leaders to drive the flagship FastNet project. Working in close partnership with the UK Met Office, these roles are central to our Environment Mission, which aims to deliver practical decision intelligence for climate resilience and national security.
The Roles:
Theme Lead – AI for Weather Forecasting (Principal Research Scientist): Provide strategic leadership for a diverse research portfolio. You will work with key national and international stakeholders to shape the research strategy, lead grant proposals, and ensure the UK remains at the forefront of AI-enabled environmental science.
Research Lead – AI for Weather Forecasting: Manage a team of researchers and software engineers in the development of FastNet, a Graph Neural Network architecture for Medium-Range Weather Prediction (MLWP). Your goal is to operationalize the optimal blend of physics-based and machine learning models for high-resolution UK forecasting.
About the Project: FastNet version 1.0 has already demonstrated the ability to surpass the skill of current global models in several metrics. The next phase involves moving toward operational deployment and expanding its reach to support sectors like energy, transport, and international disaster response.
Candidate Profile: We are looking for individuals with a strong track record in AI, machine learning, physics, or environmental science, and a passion for multidisciplinary, impact-driven collaboration.
