Department of Environmental Studies, Colby College, Waterville Maine

The Environmental Studies (ES) Department and the Davis Institute for Artificial Intelligence at Colby College invite applicants for a tenure track assistant professor position in Environmental Artificial Intelligence to begin September 1, 2023.

We invite candidates who develop and use artificial intelligence (AI) to harness environmental, ecological, technical or social data to address complex environmental problems. We are particularly interested in scholars who are able to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries with colleagues from the natural sciences, social sciences, or the humanities. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a related discipline and a strong commitment to undergraduate education. The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced courses in the development and application of AI in an environmental context as well as contribute to courses in the environmental studies curriculum. This candidate will contribute core courses to our interdisciplinary Environmental Computation major and have opportunities to participate in established collaborations with the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. For more information about the Environmental Studies Department, faculty, and curriculum, please see the Environmental Studies website at www.colby.edu/environmentalstudies. Colby College is a welcoming campus community, which embraces individuals of all backgrounds. We are eager to hear from those whose teaching and research contribute to the diversity of our campus and who have a record of success mentoring individuals from groups under-represented in higher education.

Colby College, through a generous gift that created the Davis Institute for Artificial Intelligence, is hiring an interdisciplinary cluster of four faculty members and two postdoctoral associates over the next two years. These include searches for scholars of Environmental AI and Philosophy of AI, and a postdoctoral associate or visiting assistant professor in computer science or a related field. Faculty at Colby have numerous opportunities to collaborate on research and teaching related to AI; currently there are faculty pursuing AI-related scholarship in geology, anthropology, music, physics, economics, east Asian studies and computer science.
