CANDIDATES FACING ENVIRONMENT QUESTIONS SEPT. 29

September 21, 2011 – Peterborough, ON

The start of fall is an ideal time to ask provincial candidates about their positions on the environment and our future. On September 29th, local candidates will get a chance to respond to both prepared and audience questions at a candidates’ debate on the environment and sustainability. Seven local groups are hosting the event at George Street United Church (Lower Hall) from noon to 1:30 pm.

“The environment is a key economic and ecological asset in the Kawarthas. Our many members across the region are interested in candidates’ positions,” says Terry Rees of the Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Associations.

Trent University Professor Stephen Hill says there are several key environmental issues affecting us locally. These include nature protection, sustainable agriculture, provincial planning, nuclear power and energy, and funding and jobs at the Ministry of Natural Resources. “We also need to plan for the long-term, such as through sustainable practices and support for new Trent and Fleming programs,” he says.

Representing both rural and urban interests,  seven local organizations are sponsoring the event: the Council of Canadians (Peterborough Chapter), Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Associations, Kawartha World Issues Centre, Peterborough Field Naturalists (PFN), Ontario Public Interest Research Group (Peterborough), Safe and Green Energy, and the Unitarian Fellowship of Peterborough.

The public is also invited to attend and put their own questions to candidates. After the debate, the questions and candidates’ responses will be posted on the PFN’s website, at www.peterboroughnature.org.

So ask some of your own questions, on the doorstep or at the September 29th debate. After all, the environment is about our health, our jobs, and our future.
