The Kawartha World Issues Centre invites you to MIX and MINGLE with Mariatu Kamara on Saturday January 28th from 6:00pm - 7:00pm at ARTSPACE.

Courageous, honest and inspiring are just a few words that have been used to describe UNICEF Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict and Recipient of the Women’s Refugee Commission Voice of Courage Award, Mariatu Kamara was born and raised in the West African nation of Sierra Leone. She is currently studying in Toronto. Mariatu’s harrowing experiences as a child victim of war and its aftermath are the subject of her memoir, The Bite of the Mango (2008). In an Amputee Camp for war-wounded people in the outskirts of Freetown, Mariatu began her journey to personal healing through the performing arts as a member of Aberdeen’s Theater Troupe. Her story is one of breathtaking courage, hope and inspiration.

The event will be catered by Black Honey.

Special guest appearance by  Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira of the fabulous Po’Girl.

Tickets are $10 for Students and $25 for Adults. This includes the Mix and Mingle, as well as the KWIC World Issues Cafe (below), and feature film presentation. Tickets are available at KWIC, Titles Bookstore, and The Spill.

Peterborough Annual One World Dinner

Date: Saturday, Feb 4th, 2012 - 5:30 pm

Enjoy food & conversation from around the world

The Peterborough One World Dinner organizing committee is hosting the world’s largest community vegetarian potluck! The One World Dinner is a community and fundraising event held each winter, organized collaboratively by the Kawartha World Issues Centre, the New Canadians’ Centre, Jamaican Self-Help and the World University Service of Canada (WUSC).

This annual local event brings together families and folks to enjoy an evening of great food, live entertainment, a guest speaker, square dance, raffle, and dessert auction. All proceeds from the dinner directly fund global education activities and outreach in the Peterborough area; proceeds from the beverage table specifically help to sponsor one refugee student each year to attend Trent University through the Trent International Program.

Dance with the Resolutionaries following the event.

Everyone brings a meatless dish to share, ingredient list & a dish pack!
