Oxfam: Call to Action 'The 2011 UN Climate Change Conference'
Over the past few weeks, over 3,000 of people took action and told the federal government to show leadership on climate financing and adaptation at this year’s UN climate conference.
Overall, the outcome of negotiations fell far short of the dramatic action needed to avoid catastrophic climate change. The failure to seal an ambitious deal that would make greenhouse gas emissions peak within five years will have painful consequences for poor people around the world.
However, some progress was made. The Kyoto protocol will continue as the foundation of global efforts to fight climate change, albeit without Japan, Russia or Canada. And new negotiations will be launched to conclude a wider legal agreement for all countries by 2015, to enter into force from 2020.
On the crucial question of assistance for communities reeling from climate change, here’s what you and thousands of others helped achieve:
Canada reaffirmed its $1.2 billion commitment to “fast-start” financing over three years, announcing $600 million in new projects;
With Canada’s support, the Green Climate Fund was launched, including key provisions on gender, national ownership and civil society participation, so that it serves the needs of the majority of the world’s food producers – women.
We still need your help to keep the pressure on:
The federal government has yet to say how much of its climate financing will help poor communities adapt to climate change. At least half should be spent on adaptation.
World leaders did not agree on sources of revenue for the Green Climate Fund. Canada needs to throw its support behind the international shipping tax which gained many adherents and could be approved over the coming months.
World leaders did not agree on ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Canada has yet to announce measures to meet its voluntary reduction target, and has indicated it will withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol. Your Member of Parliament needs to hear from you if we are to avoid falling from climate crisis to climate catastrophe.
The rural women who marched outside the conference centre in Durban won’t be satisfied with empty promises. And neither should you.
With your help, our collective voice can be heard. Together and with our allies, we can move decision-makers towards meaningfully addressing climate change and help to ensure everyone has enough to eat always.
Thank you for taking action with us.
