I have a 2020 return with a refund that must be postmarked by tomorrow. Can I send it to the client for ELECTRONIC signature, then print the return with the electronic signature and mail it?

2020 can no longer be eFiled. Tomorrow is 5/17/24! My issue is the signature options - so I can print and mail the return by tomorrow - so the refund is not lost.
If electronic signature is not allowed, maybe if I send the return to the client, they print (if they can) and ORIGINAL sign, then scan (if they can) back to me? Then I can use that signature page to get it mailed?

I’m not sure about the e-signature thing but in any case, why not place responsibility on the client to get it in the mail on time? Since you’re emailing them a signature doc, I don’t see why you can’t just email the return with clear instructions on where to sign, where to send, how to send (certified/registered), etc. Unless you’re the one at fault for this last minute filing, put the responsibility where it belongs- on the client.

I would normally agree, but this is a “died suddenly” situation with the widow left with four children. It’s been a nightmare for her – so I’m trying to do whatever I can to help her.

I don’t think so….and besides, due to the husband being deceased, getting a POA takes time – too much time.

OK! So….the IRS WILL accept an ‘original’ signature – mailed – even if it is actually a scanned copy of the signature page?!
