I made a dumb error on my clients 2021 tax return.  My client passed away March of 2022 and on her 2021 tax return I by mistake (typo) put date of death as March 2021.  I was not aware until now.  So I did her 2022 tax return and put date of death as March 2022.  CA accepted the return but the IRS rejected the e-file.  Rejected because social security locked the file because taxpayer is deceased.
What would be the best way to correct this.

  1.  File an amended 2021 return correcting the date of death?
  2.  Have her daughter file a paper return with  death certificate?  There is a refund due from IRS
  3.   Try to call the IRS?
  Thanks for any help.

Joanne,

The only thing I can find is in the 2 links below.  But since the taxpayer is actually deceased I am not sure that is the appropriate procedure. Perhaps filing an amended return with a copy of the death certificate might work, but that will take time to find out if it does work.  Of course you have 3 year to recover the refund.  Maybe iy would be appropriate to call the Taxpayer Advocate Serice LA office at 213 576-3140 and perhaps they provide a procedure or actually help.
