Hello,

As a late bloomer, I was still floundering around wondering what to do with my exported Catch notes. Originally, I had wanted a way to keep a text file of frequently-used passwords on my first Android phone because copy-n-paste was so much easier than typing on it. Then I started using Catch for quick notes to be filed, acted on, or deleted later. Then there was no more Catch, as we all know.

I tried some of the replacement apps and they didn't fit my needs, so I thought I might try Google Keep. Searching for a way to import my Catch notes into Keep, I found your post about CleverNote. So this afternoon I visited your website, clicked on MyNotes, and wham, instant note space. Then I checked how to import notes from Catch and did what it said and ... wow. Just ...wow. Importing a batch of notes took less than no time, there were no duplicates, and all my notes were there in neat little boxes that expanded when I edited them!!

That's some elegant work, and I'm impressed. I just have a few polite questions:
  • Is it possible to have line breaks in the notes? Maybe it's a function of importing vs. writing a new note, but all the lines of my notes run together. What if I added <br> tags or something?
  • I guess the date the note was written didn't make it into the enex file? Or is there a way CleverNote could see it that I missed?
  • (Saving the best for last) Um, what do I do to register? Am I registered just by using the app? Because I'm liking it a lot so far, and a lifetime free license sounds mighty fine.
Looking forward to the re-release of the Chrome extension and the Android app and, further down the line, the iOS app! Thank you for this elegant and simple app!

Hi Glenda

Many thanks for the kind words. We are very much in beta, so feedback like yours is enormously helpful in letting us know where the rough edges are.

On your points ...

. line breaks
We'll have a look at it. I'm hopeful that there is a very quick fix (I mean a few hours) that we can apply to restore the original line breaks. Having said that, there is still an open question over how they are displayed. When quick notes are not being edited, we lose the line breaks in order to display as much of the note contents as possible on a single screen. When you click on a note to edit it, we restore the line breaks. Your thoughts on which aspects (fidelity of formatting v. compactness of display) are of most importance would be very helpful.

. creation date
We use the Last Modified Date rather than the Creation Date, so the most recently edited Catch Note should be at the top of your list of quick notes. If you click the open blind button (the double downward chevron), and then click it again, you should be able to see all of the Last Modified Dates. The reason we can't bring the Creation Date across is that we are storing your notes in Google Drive, and as far as Drive is concerned, the Creation Date is the date of the import.

. registration
Before we launch the service we'll have a more formal registration screen which will simply ask you to accept a fairly standard set of terms and conditions, mention our privacy policy (it's benign), and provide some pointers to help first time users. Other than that, there is no more formality to registration since we are using Google for authentication and user control, and of course Drive for storage.

So, you're registered. At some point in the future we will be adding paid-for "pro" features to the app., but our charter for beta users such as yourself is that you will automatically be pro-enabled free of charge as a token of our appreciation.

Look out for an update on the line break issue.

kind regards
Joy

We've implemented a change to show quick notes with their original line breaks. This preserves the formatting, at the expense of making less of the note visible.

Please do let us have any feedback on this change.

I will! I've been overwhelmed with work, so I haven't been experimenting with CleverNote as much. Now that the semester's almost over (I'm a college professor), I should have more time.
