Another difference in the filters is the carbon filtration. All of the models have some form of carbon filtration. However, the lower models usually have the sponge type carbon filter as opposed to the higher models that have a granular type carbon filter.
The app allows you to set up automated schedules so you could tell it to come on high for a little while and then go low. I really thought this sounded like a nice feature and I was tempted to buy that model until I started to read some of the reviews. The reviews were saying that the Wi-Fi connectivity was terrible and it would never stay connected
When you buy the replacement filters for the higher-level models, the 5500-2 and the c555, it comes with one HEPA filter and one carbon filter because the higher-level carbon filter is meant to last 12 months along with the HEPA filter. However, the cost for the 5500-2 replacement filters is a bit more expensive than the 5300.
Unfortunately, so far Costco does not seem to carry the filters for the c555. The only place I could find them was directly through Winix. These were the highest priced filters and the only difference is the additional antimicrobial coating.
Another thing to be aware of is the availability of the filters. The c545 and the c555 from Costco take a slightly different size filter than all the other models of Winix air purifiers. So the c545 filters are only available through Costco or Winix directly and as I mentioned the c555 are only available through Winix.
The 5300-2 and the 5500-2 are extremely popular air purifiers and their replacement filters are widely available. Those filters are available at a variety of retailers including Amazon, Home Depot, and Walmart.
Because the 5300-2 and 5500-2 are so popular they also have third-party replaceable filters available. You can save a little bit of money by buying a third-party filter as opposed to a Winix branded filter.
Thanks so much for this really helpful review. In case it helps you or others, I've gotten some information from Winix about filters for their C-555 model. Winix refers to these filters as Filter I. As Cindy noted, these filters are not widely available and they are pricier than Winix filters for similar models. However, I asked a Winix representative whether the filter for 5500-2 (Filter H) would fit the C-555 model. The person said that one could use the Filter H with the C-555, though Filter H lacks the antimicrobial coating present on the Filter I. Thus, folks with a C-555 model who don't care about the coating could save some money by purchasing the Filter H.
I own two 5500-2's, and want at least one more. Turns out that I just don't care about any carbon filtration nor the remote (no way to operate it in the dark when I need it!). So the 5300-2 makes far more sense for me.
But! I don't want to stock a different replacement filter! I want to buy one replacement HEPA filter that fits in all machines. I'm OK with leaving the carbon part out completely. But what I really, really want to know: Is the HEPA filter interchangeable between the 5200 and 5300?
I can almost guarantee that won't work. I haven't tried that with the Costco models, but I did try it with the 5500 (advanced carbon) and 5300 (basic carbon). It seems like you should be able to use a 5300 machine with the 5500 filter since they're the same size, but Winix makes it so they just won't go in right.
Can you use the C-555 replacement filters in a C-545 and vice versa? If the filters are interchangeable it seems you are only paying for the difference between a WIFI connected vs Remote version of the machine.
The AM80 is the newer exterior but has the same advanced carbon filter as the 5500-2. I believe it's just the next generation of the 5500-2. The AM80 doesn't have a remote or wifi, but costs MORE than the 5500-2, which makes no sense to me.
