I got my husband a Z Flip 3. He was really liking the phone (his first foldable), but he's been having trouble with the cover screen getting activated in his pocket a fair amount. This results in a couple problems:

Somehow the brightness level of the cover screen gets changed, which overrides the auto-brightness that he wants the screen to be set at. This creates a follow-on problem where when his phone is docked on his wireless charger on the nightstand, the cover screen is way too bright if the auto-brightness gets turned off without him realizing.

He also is not a fan of having to double-tap the cover screen in order to be able to review notifications, but that's unavoidable, as most (all?) phones require that before you can swipe through notifications.

Is there any way to fix the 2 problems he's having? He's kind of leaning towards returning the phone because of the cover screen misbehaving. Are there some settings or utilities that allow him to control the cover screen more granularly?

Slip your Galaxy Z Flip series phone out of your pocket for a quick glance at the convenient Cover screen. All it takes is a few taps and swipes on the screen to see your notifications, Quick settings, widgets, date, and time. If you need to open an app or reply to a message, you can immediately view it by unfolding the phone. You can also answer or make calls without opening the phone. If you're looking for the latest Galaxy Z Flip phones, you can find them on our website.

You can take selfies as well as videos on the Cover screen of your Z Flip4 with Quick shot! You can check out our camera article to learn more about using Quick shot and other features on your Z Flip phone.

You can adjust the aspect ratio used on the Cover screen as well. While your phone is unfolded, open the Camera app, and then select PHOTO, VIDEO, or PORTRAIT. Tap the aspect ratio icon at the top of the screen, and then tap your desired option, such as 3:4. Then, fold your phone and double press the Side key to launch the Camera app. The aspect ratio will transfer to your Quick shots!

If you need to quickly turn on Wi-Fi or adjust the screen brightness, you can do so from the Cover screen. Double tap the Cover screen, and then swipe down to open the Quick settings. You can swipe left to view additional settings. The following are available:

You can also manage your widgets while your phone is open. From Settings, tap Cover screen, and then tap Widgets. Tap the switch(es) next to your desired widget(s) to add or remove them. To rearrange your widgets, tap Reorder at the top, and then use the arrows to move them up or down in the list.

Accessing Samsung Wallet is easier than ever when you need to quickly pay for your morning cup of coffee or view your ID cards. The cards stored in Samsung Wallet will be available right from the Cover screen. Just double tap the Cover screen, and then swipe up to open Samsung Wallet. Swipe left or right to view your available cards.

Tap and swipe to control your phone and take selfies even when it's folded shut. The cover screen notifies you at a glance, while contextual continuity lets you tap to seamlessly transition to relevant apps as you unfold your phone.

If a notification requires you to open an app, you can easily switch directly to it. Tap the notification on the cover screen, tap again, and then unfold the phone to directly access the selected app.

Tap cover screen and swipe to right to answer a call or swipe to left to reject it. If you aren't using a headset or Bluetooth audio accessory, the speakerphone will be enabled when you answer a phone call with the phone folded. You can also use Bixby to help you make calls. Simply say, "Hi Bixby, call Mum."

On my Z Flip, double pressing the power button no longer activates selfie mode while closed, the screen blinks black for a second then does nothing, when I open the phone the camera app opens though. I can turn the outer display on with the phone open also. Is there a setting for this somewhere I accidentally hit? I can't find any settings for the cover display anywhere!

Hi!I had the same problem. To fix this, go to settings, then search in settings 'side key' and then click 'side key advanced features' then once in advanced features, click the first button called 'side key' and you will see that your double press has been switched to something other than 'quick launch camera.' Once you select quick launch camera for double press, you'll be able to finally use your front screen camera. Make sure u give it a second after double pressing otherwise pressing sporadically over and over won't make it pop up. Hope that helps!

Hi, hoping there's a simple fix for this. Backstory: I started making a site on 7.0 but realised 7.1 had a bit more functionality that made it a better long term choice (I think!?!?), on the 7.0 I made a nice cover page using the "spotlight" cover page style - has a split screen and you can add images one side and a logo, some text and buttons/links etc. A nice landing page.

Process I followed: make 2 sections, one a full-bleed slideshow and another with the text I want. The result looks fine on desktop but checking mobile and its horrendous, just two thin columns and squashed text. I'm assuming I can add some code to the above that instructs it to make the slideshow/images move to the top (say 50% of the screen) with the text below? (be nice to get some text/logo overlay). I have an inkling of an idea it's to do with screen sizes and you add something to that effect but my coding knowledge is rudimentary at best, I can edit styles after much googling/copy-pasting but I'm no coder. I tried something I found but clearly it wasnt right cause it had no effect, or I added it wrong in the box. So, help gratefully received thanks!

Also a possibility is if you've been playing with conky and you've got a conky config set to 'panel/dock' window type, in which case it's possible that you've got conky drawing an invisible rectangle and pushing your screen margin up.

I actually had a similar problem that uhcafigdc had. I was trying to use Docky on my laptop (no external monitor) using ZevenOS. It only seemed to work if I set Docky for autohide or intellihide and even then it only mostly worked. Notably it didn't work with my favourite browser, Opera. I had the same problem with the bottom of the Window not going down to the bottom of the screen. I didn't try every app, of course. But the windows maximized nicely for Open Office, KMyMoney, and Firefox, but for Opera, I just couldn't get a nicely maximized window while Docky was running; even if it was set to autohide or intellihide.

I'm not too worried if Docky won't work. I'm doing quite well with an extra panel at the top of the screen on autohide with launchers. But having Docky work properly would be in the "nice to have" category...

The 1.5-inch screen still has enough space to show basic information and app notifications, as well as offer interesting shortcuts and features. Here are five tips for using the Razr 2023's cover screen to its full potential.

Admittedly, the external screen is too small to preview everything that the main camera would capture, so you'll mostly be using it to center the photo. Keep in mind that the external screen is oriented horizontally but shoots vertically, so if you want a wide selfie rather than a tall one, you'll need to counterintuitively rotate the phone sideways.

Also keep in mind that using the outer display defaults selfies to 4:3 resolution, which cannot be changed. As a cute detail, you can turn on a feature for an animated cartoon to wave on the small screen to get kids' attention while taking a photo.

In addition to the cover display, the Motorola Razr 2023 is a solid foldable phone at an attractive $700 price compared to its pricier competitors. Check out my full Razr 2023 review to learn more about the tradeoffs Motorola made to keep the phone affordable.

Amid this rapid change, professional organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have stepped in with recommendations. AAP calls for no screen time at all for children until 18 to 24 months, except for video chatting, and says kids ages 2 to 5 should get an hour or less of screen time per day. It has also developed the Family Media Use Plan for older kids, in which parents and children negotiate limits and boundaries around screen usage. In its guidelines on physical activity, sedentary behavior and sleep for young children, WHO similarly recommends no screens for kids under 2, and less than an hour a day for kids 2 to 5.

Qualitative studies suggest several reasons for the widespread screen use. One survey of 133 parents of preschool-age kids led by Rutgers University professor of nutritional sciences Carol Byrd-Bredbenner, PhD, for example, found that many parents reported lacking affordable alternative entertainment for their kids. Others cited factors such as their own exhaustion, the need to get things done around the house and bad weather for excess screen time (Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior , Vol. 47, No. 4, 2015).
