Vada Curry and Set Dosa, a famous combo in food. And it is often had as a breakfast meal, not ordinary breakfast but a special breakfast. Frankly speaking i had never tasted this. But i have seen it. Till couple weeks back, i have never thought of making it at home and posting it here. There is a little inspiration behind this, every friday hubby and me visit a temple in a place near our town called suchidram.

Couple weeks back, hubby took me to a veg hotel named maruti near that temple, it is not that big, but it is a family hotel. But i should tell you the food tasted so yummy. First time i ordered chole bature and it was mind blowing. Hubby ordered veg kothu parota, i tasted that too, it was yum. But their speciality is rasam vadai, i literally melted there when i tasted it, it was delicious... Then i saw a person near me ordering set dosa and vada curry. they brought it and it looked totally divine. At that moment i decided to try that combo and post it here. Couple days later i made it for breakfast along with set dosa. Hubby tasted it and told me no hotel food can stand near this and it is simply superb and he ate so many set of dosa..

Masala Vadai, as I was saying earlier, are deep-fried lentil fritters, jazzed up with fennel seeds, fresh mint, chillies, ginger and onion. Any leftover masala vadais are crumbled up, then cooked in a tomato-onion gravy. Red chilli powder and sambar powder are used to flavour the gravy, as well as fresh coconut. The tempering consists of mustard and fennel seeds, asafoetida and dry red chillies.

5. Now, we will start preparing the Vada Curry. Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed pan. Add in the mustard and allow it to sputter. Then add in the fennel seeds, asafoetida and dry red chillies. Allow them to stay in for a few seconds.

To make it gluten-free, skip the asafoetida in the masala vadai as well as in the above Vada Curry recipe. Most commercially available Indian brands of asafoetida contain wheat flour and are, hence, best avoided when one is following a gluten-free diet.

4. I have used home-made sambar powder here, which is moderately spicy, hence the addition of red chilli powder. If the sambar powder you are using is quite spicy, you may skip adding the red chilli powder.

6. If you reside in the South of India, it should not be very difficult to get ready-made Masala Vadai at restaurants or street-side stalls. You could use those to make Vada Curry, too, which makes the process very simple.

Yummy! This is one of our favorites and I think I should head now to make some vada batter and make this vadacurry. Best with idli and dosa for a comforting meal. I love the step by step instructions.

My day always starts in the kitchen whether its a weekday or a weekend. I woke up early knowing that its Monday and I have a busy week ahead. I started by making a cup of tea for myself and steaming the idlis for breakfast. I was wondering what to serve as a side dish and finally decided to make this Chettinad Vada Curry.

Vada Curry is very famous in South India and served as a side dish with idli or dosa. I have often relished this dish and learnt to prepare this curry from my mother. The deep fried Vadas made with chana dal are cooked with coconut milk. You can easily make coconut milk at home. So, sharing a detailed recipe and hope you all have a wonderful week ahead..

Heat oil in frying pan. Make small balls of the lentil batter and when oil is warm, drop it in oil carefully and fry it on low flame for few minutes. When it turns golden brown, remove them from the pan. Break these vada in 2-3 pieces.

Vada Curry is very addictive if you like masala vada and it is sure a winner to me. I agree it takes time to prepare the vadas first then get on to make the gravy but am sure it is worth the time, it tastes that good. Now lets get on to make vada curry .

The first time I had Vadacurry was during my college days in Chennai. I loved it so much and I still do. I tried this recipe recently and I was thrilled to bits. The traditional way to do the vadacurry is to deep fry the vadais and then add it to the curry. But I am steaming the vadais today to keep it a little more healthier. This recipe has been minimally adapted from Chef.Dhamu. Here is how to do Vadacurry.

Soak chana dal (kadalai paruppu) in water for 3 hours. Grind the chana dal with salt and fennel seeds sprinkling very little water while grinding. Grind to a slightly coarse paste. Transfer the ground paste to an idli plate.

Take a mixie jar and add in the tomatoes, garlic and ginger to the jar. Grind to a smooth paste. Add the ground tomato-ginger-garlic paste to the pan. Add in the salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and coriander powder.

Vada curry name says it all :), curry made with vada. Vada is lentil fritters that are deep fried or steamed. This is a dish from the southern state Tamil Nadu in India. This curry is known to be made with left over vada. I love this curry but did not have any enthusiasm to make vada, so decided to make these with some frozen falafel. The taste turned out exactly like the vada curry made with homemade vada. Using the falafel will take very less time to whip up this curry..

Sathish (Jai), is a newly appointed medical representative who is basically a family man living with his brother (Aruldoss), an auto rickshaw driver. Sathish is always embarrassed about his mobile phone, and much to his delight, he picks up a phone which is left carelessly by its owner at a tea shop. The mobile phone gets him into trouble, and his carefree life with his girlfriend Naveena (Swathi Reddy) turns upside-down.

Dayanidhi Azhagiri's Meeka Entertainment announced its next production venture in July 2013 to be directed by debutant Saravana Rajan, a former associate of director Venkat Prabhu. The film was titled Vadacurry, a famous South Indian gravy/curry.[4] Jai and Swati Reddy were selected to play the lead, coming together after Subramaniapuram.[5] Though it was initially reported that Anirudh Ravichander would compose the music for the film,[3][6] the producer confirmed in September 2013 that Yuvan Shankar Raja was signed on.[7] However despite composing one song for the film, Yuvan's busy schedule meant that he unable to complete his commitments and was replaced by newcomer duo Vivek Shiva and Mervin Solomon, who had been recommended by Anirudh.[8][9] Sunny Leone was signed on by Azhagiri for a special appearance in a song, making her Tamil debut with this film.[10][11]

The filming began on 19 August 2013.[12][13] A pooja was held with director Vetrimaaran and Kasthuri in attendance.[14] The first look poster was unveiled on 23 August 2013.[15] The first schedule of shooting was completed on 3 September 2013.[16]

The film's soundtrack was composed by newcomer duo Vivek-Mervin, while Yuvan Shankar Raja composed one song "Uyirin Maeloru Uyirvandhu" for the film. The songs were met with a positive response from critics.[17] The album marked the Tamil debut of Diwakar. The duo later composed two more songs, which featured in the film but not in the soundtrack.

The New Indian Express wrote, "Between the positives and the negatives, the positives largely outweigh the negatives here. A commendable effort from a debutant maker to strike away from the routine formula scenario, Vadacurry is a fairly engaging watch".[26] Indo-Asian News Service gave it 3 stars out of 5 and wrote, "Vadacurry has a promising story, one that connects with you instantly, but it needed powerful performances to be an edge-of-the-seat-thriller, which surely was missing. Despite...shortcomings, Saravana keeps audiences hooked with his story that dishes out all the necessary elements of a commercial entertainer...the end product is not exceptional, but satisfying".[27] Sify wrote, "Vadacurry is light and easy, enjoyable for the most part and is packed with delicious little scenes and moments that will have you chuckling, the moment you settle into your seat. Debutant Saravana Rajan, coming from Venkat Prabhu school of filmmaking has made a fun film, with right mix of entertainment elements".[28] S. Saraswathi of Rediff gave the film 3 out of 5, calling it "a commendable effort by the director and definitely worth a watch".[29] Behindwoods gave the film 2.75 out of 5 and stated, "Vadacurry has a lot of fun elements on offer", calling it "a spicy entertainer pulled out of a normal story".[30] Oneindia praised the movie for what it called a "high engagement rate".[31] Indiaglitz in its review said, "Debutante director Saravanan Rajan has packaged a wafer thin story with equal share of comedy, romance, sentiment and suspense".[32]
