Dear Presidents and Delegates,

We need YOU and YOUR Members at the Board of Education Meeting This Thursday, May 9th @ 7:15 pm to show opposition to the proposed revisions to the Wellness Policy and mandate.

PTA Council and our member PTAs have led wellness efforts and activities throughout Howard County Public Schools, both during the school day and after-school.  We will continue to promote health and wellness initiatives, however we do not believe that a mandate from the Board of Education is needed to do so.

On Thursday, May 9, 2013 the Board of Education will discuss Wellness Policy 9090 which mandates the foods and beverages sold or given away to any students by any organization (PTAs, Boosters, Student Clubs, etc.) or individual at EVERY after-school or weekend activity or event. This mandate applies to all schools and includes activities like Sports’ Concession Stands, Team Banquets, After Prom, School Dances, bake sales, Spring Fairs, etc. This policy will significantly impact PTAs, Boosters, Student Clubs, and other student-groups supported by parents.

35-45 audience members are needed from each PTA on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 7:15 pm to sit in the audience.  No testifying needed.  The meeting will start promptly at 7:30 pm and you will be asked to show your support at the beginning of the meeting.

We encourage you to get this message out to ALL of your PTA members, teachers and community members.  If we do not want the BOE to make this change to the policy, we need to show them that we PTAs and parents are engaged and we care!

Below is a link to SignUp Genius with information about the event for you to provide to your members and community: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040E4CADAE2AA57-oppose

Please visit the PTACHC website for more information including how you can express your opinion to the Board of Education.

We need as many individuals as possible to attend on Thursday evening, so let everyone know.

Please call me if you have any questions.  I will see you on Thursday evening!

Sincerely,
Christina
