The Pipes, the pipes are calling

Calling all the way from Havana to Liberty Hall on Wednesday, July 16th. The Clé Club's final session of this season is a  celebration of summer with special guest Alexander Suarez Mendez.

Alexander, from Havana Cuba, is 24 and began learning the Galician Pipes at 14. He learned the uilleann pipes more recently, in 2011, from Gay McKeon at workshops in Havana. He also learned how to make reeds for the uileann pipes from Donnacha Dwyer, another visitor to Cuba.,

 There are now more than a dozen uilleann pipers in Havana and Pina Del Rio, performing regularly, and Alexander teaches Irish music on the pipes and tin whistle for young people in Cuba.
