A magic bullet is a compact blender that claims to offer a quick and easy way to create smoothies/blended drinks in just minutes. The current design is a bottom stand that has a plastic gear [left image below]; the plastic gear meshes with the rubber gear [right image below] on the bottom of a cup which contains your smoothie ingredients. When you push the cup into the stand, the gears are supposed to mesh which causes the blade to turn and blend the ingredients into a smooth concoction.

My sketches below illustrate my motivation and idea for redesigning these gears. My idea is that there should be slots in each protusion of the plastic gear. The rubber gear would have protrusions that can latch into the slots. Only when these two gears align perfectly will the motor in the Magic Bullet be activated, causing the blade to turn.

The current design allows for the gears to turn even if the gears are not aligned perfectly. So if the user pushes down during this occurrence, this misalignment causes the rubber gear to provide a high amount of friction on the plastic gear, which ultimately wears down the gear. My redesign would prevent misalignment of the gear, by ensuring a tight lock and fit between gears, before applying a high speed to both gears.
