I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit, which I installed using the original release (not the newer 12.04.2 release), and have been successfully using netflix-desktop ever since the ppa:ehoover/compholio repository was made available. I never encountered any problems, whatsoever, until a couple of days ago.

For those that don't like messing with the console, you can just go to your home directory and either click on "View" and check "Show Hidden Files", or just press Ctrl+H, then scroll down until you see the folder labeled ".wine-browser", perform a right mouse-click on the folder, and select "Move to Trash" from the resulting menu.

I don't think it is the silverlight update which does it. It is Firefox update. So press F11 to get into window mode. Then press F10. Go to Options/Preferences ->Advanced-> updates, then disable the automatic browser update.

I am having an issue with playing Netflix content through Safari since upgrading to Yosemite. Specifically, Netflix will start to play the content and then display an error after a few seconds. The error reads "Whoops, something went wrong... display error. There appears to be a display problem. Please ensure your monitor is HDCP compliant and is not mirror using airplay."

My monitor is HDCP compliant (HP ZR30W) and it's the only monitor connected to my 2014 MacPro. I presume this is an issue with the latest version of Safari and all the next extensions Apple added to support Netflix streaming without the Silverlight plugin.

What has changed all of a sudden that we get these HDCP errors. I was watching Starttrek discovery when suddenly after about 5/10 minutes of play it stopped and gave me this error. This must be a bug in Safari / OSX and or Netflix. I never had any problems before today using netflix on my mac.

The problem still persists with MacOS 10.13.2 and Safari 11.02. I suspect that Apple is not interested in fixing the problem: too busy selling iPhones. I've had no problems with Chrome and Netflix. Maybe Apple will realize that first you switch to Chrome then to the Pixel phone then to those (relatively cheap) powerful Windows machines.

Carolyn - My Silverlight plug-in was already properly configured. With Yosemite & Safari 8.0, Netflix no longer uses Silverlight. Instead, it plays content using HTML5. So, the plugin should not be the issue.

Actually, I posted the same question a few days ago, this is how I fixed it: Enter Netflix and go to your account, then to your profile, then to Playback settings and there, uncheck the bottom option (prefer HTML5 instead of Silverlight), you should be able to play movies again... obviously, you have to have Silverlight in your computer.

I'm running into this same problem. I also recently installed Yosemite. For me though, it stopped working when I updated my Adobe Flash plugin today. Although, I'm not sure that should be related. Switching my netflix preference to Silverlight, as was suggested above, worked and now I can play netflix again. But This seems like it should be unnecessary.

Unplugging the second monitor from the thunderbolt-VGA adaptor fixed the issue, and now Netflix plays with the HTML5 setting turned on! So it would appear that the second monitor was the problem. Which would track with what this page says:

The page states that a Thunderbolt-DVI connector should work. Luckily this monitor has both, so the next thing I will try is to buy a Thunderbolt-DVI adaptor and retest with both monitors attached (I don't have one at the moment). If that works, I'll post the results, maybe next week.

This kind of stinks because I've always been two-monitor dude, I like having a movie playing on one monitor while I work on the other for example. For now, until I get the adaptor, I'll switch netflix back to using silverlight, which seems to still work with both monitors attached.

This issue only occurs on my desktop MacPro. I also own a MacBook Pro. If I change the Netflix HTML5 settings, then my MacBook Pro will lose the benefit of HTML5 and longer battery life. Of course it doesn't matter too much for the desktop MacPro.

My monitor is HDCP compliant as well and I only have one connected. It's connected by a third-party Thunderbolt-to-DisplayPort adapter (not mini-displayport). Maybe I should try the HDMI and see if it works, although I hate HDMI. Thanks for the idea!

While this workaround may work, you should not be forced to use one sort of monitor or another with a computer that you own. If you google HDCP, you'll see that it's been broken since before it was actually released and therefore serves no purpose other than to annoy and antagonize legitimate users. It is totally unacceptable to me that Apple is doubling down on this technology with Yosemite/HTML5. I have an old projector that still works great with DVI but does not support HDCP. That means I can't watch iTunes videos, and now apparently can't watch HTML5 videos. I am certainly not about to replace working technology because of a software problem. What a waste.

Make sure that Silverlight is Enabled in Firefox by going to the Tools menu and selecting Add-Ons. Click on Plugins and make sure that Silverlight is enabled.

It seems the audio syncing issue is a bit of a random problem on Netflix for Mac. Have you cleared your Silverlight temp files as per the instructions on the Netflix website? Also, a temporary solution is simply to skip backwards a little bit during playback and the syncing usually corrects itself for a while although it is quite annoying to have to keep doing that.

It sounds more like a general problem with your internet connection rather than Netflix. Try turning your router off and on and again and restart your Mac. You may need some help reconfiguring your router or have a problem with your Internet Service Provider. Does the internet wifi work on other devices such as your phone for example? Alternatively, you could try connecting to the internet with a network cable to your router instead of WiFi.

thats the thing, the internet works fine and i can get on other websites and everything but as soon as i try to go to netflix it ways that it cant connect to the server even tho the internet is working and every other website is working

You have encountered an issue specific to Microsoft Silverlight, the software used to watch movies on the Netflix website. This issue is often resolved by uninstalling and then reinstalling Microsoft Silverlight on your computer.

Completely close any currently open internet browser windows.
Navigate to your Hard Drive.
Select Library.
Select Internet Plugins.
Drag Silverlight.plugin to your trash.
Once you have emptied your trash, Microsoft Silverlight uninstallation will be complete.
After completing the above steps, attempting to Watch Instantly on will prompt you to reinstall Microsoft Silverlight.

Here is what I found on macbook pro 2009. When I ran Netflix, it was very slow choppy and the CPU was pegged. Once I took the back off, the problem was obvious. The machine was clogged with dust and this was causing the CPU to throttle down so it would not thermally overload. A can of Air from radio shack solved the problem I used the Compress Air blow out the dust out of the notebook, and a pair of tweezers to pull other dust bunnies out.

Penny, If you are using OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard you can use the startup DVD to rescue the password. But if you are using OS X 10.7 Lion or above follow these instructions to reset your Mac admin password:

i am having netflix freezing problems i am running a late model 2009 macbook air with newly formatted HD with Snow Lep installed 10.6.8. My machine has 2GB of Ram but continues to freeze after about 30 min of watching a movie. I have tried reinstalling Silver Light and installing it to point where i formatted my HD and reinstalled SL. I have cannot find the issue and i am considering buying another machine maybe back to PC. Do i not have enough Ram becuase i would think 2GB would suffice. Please help

tried Google and i have tried Firefox problem still occurs. First sign is the video starts to look like its going into slow motion then the video and audio become out of sync, within seconds it becomes unwatchable. I was convinced it was a corrupt file either in the OS or Silverlight but you would think after doing a full format and reinstall that would have fixed it. i appreciate any suggestions.

Click on your Macintosh HD and select Library and then Internet Plugins and delete the Silverlight file. Then go back to Macintosh HD and select System and then Library, Internet Plugins and make sure any Silverlight files are deleted. Finally, go to back to Macintosh HD and select Library, Application Support, Microsoft and delete the entire Silverlight folder. Empty Trash and reinstall Silverlight. Let us know if it helps.

You need to delete your PlayReady folder in your Microsoft folder. Go to Finder (the smiley icon on the far left corner of your Dock), click Go in the Menu at the top of your screen, hold down the Alt key and click on the Library option which appears. Then go to Application Support, Microsoft and delete the PlayReady folder to your Trash and empty Trash. Restart your browser and it should work.
