It'd be very helpful if we all kept good records of our conversations
with CLEAR.
This includes copying and printing chat sessions, making notes of
outbound calls to tech support (including the date, time, and names of
people you spoke with, as well as topics discussed and solutions
provided, if any).
If you have the ability to record these calls, and if it is legal in
your state, that'd be useful, too.
To check on the laws applicable to your state and the state where the
CLEAR rep is located, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_recording_laws#United_States
or check other reference sites.
Ask *each* CLEAR employee or representative you speak with what their
name is and the state from which they are talking to you. If either
you or they are in a state which requires that you inform them you are
recording the call, you must do so. Since they record calls to them,
they should consent and allow you to record the same call, but you
need to follow the applicable laws.
If you use Google Voice (free), you can easily record *inbound* calls
by pressing 4 during the call. See
http://www.google.com/support/voice/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=115082
for more. You should update your CLEAR profile so that your Google
Voice number is the one the company will use to contact you.
Google Voice does not currently offer a way to record outbound calls.
You can also record phone conversations using your iPhone (see
http://www.brighthub.com/mobile/iphone/articles/82001.aspx ). There
are a number of options for Android phones, too. Search the Android
Market for "record calls".
Another option is to use SaveYourCall.com (at
http://www.saveyourcall.com).
This could be used in combination with Google Voice, as well (to
handle the outbound calls Google Voice doesn't accommodate).
Lastly, if you want to get your recorded sound files transcribed very
easily and pretty accurately, consider getting a PhoneTag account (see
http://www.phonetag.com) and using the little-known feature which
allows you to e-mail any sound file to your account for transcription.
It is cheap, but not free, and while their interface is bad, their
transcriptions are much better than other options.
