As the project is picking up the steam, I would like to throw out a
question, what do people think about the idea of picking up random
trash in general? The future direction of the project will depend on
the answers we receive. So, does it sound like a completely crazy
thing that no one would ever do? Do some people already do something
like this on their own (even without a cleantogether.com web site
guiding them)? Feel free to respond to this post so everyone can get
involved in the discussion. Please take few moment and provide us with
the feed back -- we really need to know what you think!
Thank you all,

Dmitry A.

Good idea but not the most utmost random trash...

I still take a walk two or three times a week. I go by four trash cans
during my walk, so I pick up four handfuls of trash each walk. I do the same
thing when I walk from a parking lot and into a store. There are always
trashcans in front of stores. Plastic bags are a higher priority than paper.

Brian,
thank you for your comment,
it actually makes me thinking about one type of a potential user of
the site that totally slipped my attention, a casual trash picker kind
of person, someone who does not always have a plastic trash bag to
fill, but will be more then happy to pick an empty bottle or two on a
daily walk. So it should be made easy for this type of user to post to
the site. Take a look i created a feature request

Maybe you could think of the full-blown cleanups as akin to blog
posts, complete with pictures and a writeup, whereas the casual trash
pickup could be akin to Tweets. Maybe the posting form for the casual
trash pickup doesn't even have a text field. Maybe a checkbox or two
(or not) and a submit button. Then, maybe in a sidebar of the site,
you could have a running log of the casual cleanups. Something like:
"This Past Hour/Today/This Week, Ryan, Dmitry, Brian, and Nikita made
their town a little cleaner."
(time scale will need to change with how popular clean together becomes)

Another thing that would be cool is if we could encourage people to
recycle the recyclable trash (cans, bottles, paper) they pick up.

Another thought: we could intergrate with professional site cleaners
(like Knoll Environmental Inc. in Needham MA), that do oil spill,
mercury, lead cleanups and so on.
