I think that sounds like a very realistic approach.  I am quite skeptical of the new trend that claims to teach you to be a programmer in 6 weeks, or 8 weeks, or whatever.  Being a programmer -- a good programmer -- is the work of a lifetime.  I think any course that purports to teach programming must require a huge amount of hands-on work, and many months of study and effort.  I think the best approach are the apprenticeship programs that are popping up in companies like 8thLight Inc.  (www.8thlight.com)
