I'm surprised that I haven't seen a posting on it yet, but word from
Cleveland is that the settlement is official. Browns keep name, colors,
blah, blah, maybe even a couple of Lou Groza's old jocks, get a $28
million loan from the NFL and a guarranteed team by '99. BFD.

It Sucks! I'm ready to put a target on somebody's head (figuratively
speaking, because I don't own any guns). Let's call it Operation
Vengeance. Who's with me?

I don't know what 's wrong with this. I mean, we still have the
Cleveland Browns and everything that goes with them. We even got rid of
everything that we hated about them! I think this is a very good
settlement because it's as if we never lost them at all!

Better get on your asbesthos underwear my man. The Orthodox Jihaders are
warming up the napalm as you sit....... What you say is heresy, even if its
pretty much grounded in reality. And I happen to pretty much agree with you -
if what has been reported comes to fruition and _if_ the money is not a loan.

Its not ideal, but its pretty darn good under the circumstances with this
group of owners.

Then again, paying $ 48 mil to be free from 35 years of David Modell may be
getting off cheaply.

Gary, et.al.,

The Browns Backers, S.O.B., B.A.B.E., even "Dawgs for the Browns"
came off looking pretty good on "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer".
"Browns in Cyberspace" and the "Stop Art" stop sign came through quite
clear.

Once again the mock lynching footage led the piece, followed
by film of the exodus of the seats from the stadium... Not good images -
but other fan reaction, and the interviews with Gary, and, uh, Bob (right?)
softened those images.

Costas and the owner of Patriots were interviewed for the
in-depth piece. They talked about team moves in general, though
Costas did once again remind the world: "If Cleveland, then anywhere."

On the vote; The Pats owner (Kraft, is it?) said both
Cleveland's and Baltimore's problems must be solved - whatever that
means. Costas didn't get a chance to respond to the vote question.

No mention was made of Cleveland's "done deal" that everyone's
talking about.

Jim, I have to disagree. I'm not an "orthodox Jihader" nor am I a
native Clevelander, but to me bringing the Browns back in 3 years is
doing a disservice to the team and the players that were on that team
in the past. The tradition of Cleveland Browns' football was there for
50 years every fall and now it's gone, maybe for as much as 3 years.
The future team will have no connection to the past team other than
the name and colors.

It's like naming your second son with the name you gave your
firstborn, who died 3 years ago.

So are you following the Gary Reents view that, had White gone ahead
with the lawsuit, the NFL would have managed to keep football out of
Cleveland for good? That the same NFL that cannot stop any of its
owners from going wherever they wish could stop a team from going to
Cleveland?

I think the NFL would have realized that and would have worked out
some kind of compromise that satisfied nearly everyone. They didn't
want a lame-duck team in Cleveland for 3 years, but if presented with
that as a reality the league would have worked to prevent it.

Now we'll never know and for that I have to thank Mayor White and the
NFL, who basically sold out the Cleveland fans for 3 years with a
piece of paper. I expect White to be proclaiming "peace in our time"
any day now.

There were 400 some people to greet Art Modell as he came into Baltimore-
Watching the news and seeing everyone cheering and hugging Modell made me
sick. As I was watching this, I couldn't help but imagine what it would be
like here in Cleveland if Bernie Kosar was arriving to announce his new
ownership of a football team for Cleveland (Sigh) Well, maybe it is a
dream, but I will tell you that there would not be 500 people, there would
be thousands!!!!!!!! We, the fans, gave this team our hearts and loyalty
and while a new stadium will be great for the city of Cleveland as a true
Brown's fan, I would stand in the parking lot to watch them play - this
is what the owners just don't get and their greed will end up destroying
the NFL someday.
So, did we get a good deal? Well, for the city of Cleveland, yes. For the
Browns fans-no. No matter what happens down the road, football in
Cleveland will never be the same. Think about it. If Mayor WHite has his
way, football will be played in a nice, new, sterile, dome stadium. There
will be no more freezing your butt off on the Jan days, no more smoking at
the stadium, no more watching the team play in rain, snow, or mud. It will
be great. Or will it?
