Sleeping in the library

Hello Everyone!

I hope this finds you all doing well and enjoying summer.

I have a question: do you allow patrons to sleep in the library? Or even just nod off for a bit?

I am rethinking that aspect of our policy since the folks we wake are usually those experiencing homelessness.

At Denver Public Library, we connect with customers who fall asleep. While we acknowledge the library is comfortable, sometimes quiet place where it can be easy to nod off, sleeping is not permitted per our Library Use Policy. 

We check to make sure they are okay and politely let them know we need them to stay awake while in the library.

After 3 contacts, we will ask them to leave for the day.

At APL, we reserve the right to ask habitual sleepers to leave – however, we try not to.  Rather, staff are instructed to wake them if possible, and remind them that sleeping is discouraged.  We try to apply trauma informed care to our interactions.

 

Unfortunately, the local day rest facility is no longer an option for our patrons experiencing homelessness.

Hi Folks,

At ALD this would be considered a minor misconduct under our Patron Code of Conduct.

Similar to DPL, we check to make sure they are okay and politely let them know we need them to stay awake.  If this becomes a problem, it may result in a conversation with our Safety Specialist and/or being asked to leave for the day.

Other inappropriate activities include bathing, shaving, washing clothes, sleeping, failure to wear appropriate attire, posing a health, safety or sanitary risk or having bodily hygiene that detracts from the enjoyment of the library by others or damages library property.

Hi Linda-

 

At Boulder, we would handle the situation as Phillip and Cindy outlined. It is a rule in our library that you cannot sleep but we enforce it with empathy and a number of warnings before someone is asked to leave for the day.
