Hi CLCN friends!

Boulder Public Library District is planning to add holds pick-up lockers for the first time at our new Gunbarrel location (coming Summer 2025). The three vendors we have talked with so far all have very different formulas for how they calculate the expected demand and the number of lockers they are recommending we start with. I was hoping some of you with holds pick-up lockers could share the calculations you use to estimate locker usage. Is the number of lockers at each location based on circulation stats, % of holds at the location, something else, or just an estimate that you have adjusted over time based on use?

Thanks for any insights you might have!

Best,

Hi Tim,

Prior to ordering and installation, the number of lockers for each location was determined based on snapshot data of the average number of holds on the holdshelf.  These snapshots also showed that the median number of items on hold by one account at a given time was 3 at all locations.

We are finding that some locations need more lockers than originally thought as holds sometimes wait on carts until lockers are freed up.  We are looking at moving a section of lockers from one location (where locker holds are low) to a location that needs more.

Items are currently held for 7 days before clearing the locker.  We had tried changing this to 3 days, but found it was unrealistic and confusing for patrons because it did not coincide with the 7 days we hold items on the regular hold shelves for.

Thank you for the info, Cindy! That is helpful. I hadn’t considered the possibility that the higher locker count could keep our hold times consistent. Seems like a smart objective.
