This reminds me of when in my younger days I went to an auction and
bid on a nice big safe.
I was happy to get it cheap until they told me I would have to hire
riggers to get it out of the building as it weighed about a ton.
Lucky the auctioneer let me off and the safe remained where it was
for the next occupant of the building.

I understand this. The white elephant is a Thai term. The King to whom
all white elephants belong would give (lend) an elephant to an
official he was displeased with. It would appear as a great honor, but
it would be an elephant that was too precious to do any useful work
other than consuming food.
On the other hand if you need a hammer mill....maybe...
