I know this is a topic that has been covered many times in Clayart before.
It’s a topic I need to share with some of the potters at our league of why you don’t let Advancers get wet and why you do not fire with them in that condition.

Hope everyone does not mind going over this again and I greatly appreciate the help,
Tammy

HI Tammy -
Others will respond as well. Advancers, like high-fired pottery, do still have a very small absorption capability, and like high-fired pottery, once they have absorbed moisture, it cannot be expelled quickly. Instead, if heated quickly, it builds up internal pressure with potentially catastrophic results. Occasionally during my teaching career, a student would look at one of their pots that had been in regular use at home, and decide that another firing would improve it. If they didn't know better, they would slip it into a glaze firing. If the pot had been used in contact with water, as with a teapot, it would explode in the glaze firing with enough force to break shelves, damage the inside of the kiln, and destroy most of the other pots in the firing. The same thing happens with wet Advancer shelves. If they do get wet, just put them in an electric kiln and slowly bring them up to 1000 degrees over several days. I looked on www.kilnshelf.com and could not find specific instructions for the heating ramp when drying out Advancers. When I got my Advancers from Jim Brown, I put them in my electric kiln and preheated them below 200 degrees for 24 hours, and then did a slow-bisque to cone-022. I've fired them to cone-8 in my soda kiln a bunch of times, and they are wonderful.

Tammy,Suggest you read this page on Kilnshelf.com :
https://kilnshelf.com/category/faq/ that addresses all the possible
issues with Advancer shelves.
I have used Advancer shelves for years both with gas fired kilns in
unconditioned rooms and inside in electric kilns with no issues. I
never apply kiln wash, bu=ut do light dusting of alumina to prevent
plucking.

Hi Bill -
I was frustrated that the FAQs at www.kilnshelf.com do not provide a specific heating schedule for drying out advancers. I thought it would be there, but couldn't find it. That's probably irrelevant now, because the schedule I mentioned in my previous post worked fine for me. The big 25x25 advancers that Jim Brown has are inside an unheated garage, but they were stored outside for a long time, so I expect that the moisture is still in there. I didn't want to take a chance.

Vince,Yes, Sith Sharpe on their Kilnshelf.com site did list the drying
procedure at one time but apparently when they updated their site they
removed the instructions and instead have this statement:If you know
or suspect that your shelves have water in them, you must follow the
dry-out schedule outlined in the Saint-Gobain Technical Bulletin
Warning “Storing and Drying Requirements for ADVANCER® Refractory
Components.” I [1]
I searched for the technical article but found the drying process on
this page:

Thanks Bill. I copied out the section on storing and drying Advancers and turned it into a PDF handout on my website. So it is there when someone needs it again.
