Subject: [Clayart] Advancer Shelves that get wet
I know this is a topic that has been covered many times in Clayart
before.
It’s a topic I need to share with some of the potters at our league
of why you don’t let Advancers get wet and why you do not fire with
them in that condition.
Hope everyone does not mind going over this again and I greatly
appreciate the help,
Tammy

Hi Bill -
I was frustrated that the FAQs at www.kilnshelf.com do not provide a
specific heating schedule for drying out advancers. I thought it would
be there, but couldn't find it. That's probably irrelevant now,
because the schedule I mentioned in my previous post worked fine for
me. The big 25x25 advancers that Jim Brown has are inside an unheated
garage, but they were stored outside for a long time, so I expect that
the moisture is still in there. I didn't want to take a chance.

Tammy,Suggest you read this page on Kilnshelf.com :
https://kilnshelf.com/category/faq/ [3] that addresses all the
possible issues with Advancer shelves.
I have used Advancer shelves for years both with gas fired kilns in
unconditioned rooms and inside in electric kilns with no issues. I
never apply kiln wash, bu=ut do light dusting of alumina to prevent
plucking.

Vince,
Yes, Sith Sharpe on their Kilnshelf.com site did list the drying procedure at one time but apparently when they updated their site they removed the instructions and instead have this statement:
If you know or suspect that your shelves have water in them, you must follow the dry-out schedule outlined in the Saint-Gobain Technical Bulletin Warning “Storing and Drying Requirements for ADVANCER® Refractory Components.” <https://kilnshelf.com/2018/01/13/ive-heard-that-advancer-shelves-can-explode-if-they-get-wet/> I
I searched for the technical article but found the drying process on this page: https://shop.clay-planet.com/advancer-kiln-shelf-half-decagon.aspx
